Author Biography: from the publisher

Peter Farb's deep interest in languages and how people use it dated back to one of his fields of concentration during his undergraduate years at Vanderbilt University: the comparative study of Mediterranean languages. He was also employed on a research project to collect folk ballads and various styles of English speech in isolated communities in the South. Later, in graduate school at Columbia University, his study of anthropological linguistics gave him a new perspective on remote, non-European languages. He became familiar with a wide variety of American Indian languages - in North America as well as in Mexico, Central America and Brazil - in the course of his travels to research two of his bestselling books, Man's Rise fo Civilization as Shown by the Indians of North America and Face of North America. Mr. Farb served as Consultant fo the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., as Curator of American Indian Cultures at the Riverside Museum in New York City and as Visiting Lecturer in English at Yale University, where he was a fellow of Calhoun College. He died in 1980 at the age of 50.
