Blurb:
Are you a coward? This is not for you. We badly need a brave man. He must be 23 to 25 years old, in perfect health, at least six feet tall, weigh about 190 pounds, fluent English with some French, proficient with all weapons, some knowledge of engineering and mathematics essential, willing to travel, no family or emotional ties, indomitably courageous and handsome of face and figure. Permanent employment, very high pay, glorious adventure, great danger.
The man who answers this want-ad is "Scar" Gordon, a brave and fast-talking 20th Century Sir Lancelot who wanders footloose in the world, thristy for adventure. Scar's employer, it so happens, is "the most stare-able woman" he has ever seen, and the dangerous quest upon which she leads Scar, Rufo (an astral Sancho Panza) and Lady Vivamus (Scar's invincible sword), takes our hero along the glory road against weird foes on planets weirder still. Ultimately he comes to Center, "a lovely planet, Earth-like but lacking Earth's faults," and there finds -- or thinks he finds -- the end o his own personal quest.
