Miss Betty is set in the first years of the eighteenth century and relates the love of Rafe Otwell, a poor gentleman, for Betty pole, as well as the obstacles they must face and overcome before they can marry.

Although the two fall in love shortly after Rafe saves Betty from drowning, Rafe is imprisoned for debt. Instead of marrying another wealthy heiress or accepting an offer of money from Betty, Rafe turns highwayman.

Suspecting that he had gotten the money on the highway, Betty sets herself up as a victim and confronts him. Ashamed of himself and also aware that a less scrupulous man might have killed the woman he loves, Rafe leaves. He proves his bravery in battle, returns to England five years later, and marries Betty.
