Nope. Although the text is rather old, it was first printed as a whole story not long ago.

There is a almost supreme evil being, and now he's set his eyes and mind on your family.

And as you are well and truly captured by said nastiness, all you can do is despair as he takes special glee in showing you how he torments and tries to corrupt all of them. And how he laughs at your sons boast at being the master of his own destiny.

Pillars of the Earth.

A real long shot, but it makes some sense if the 'you' is the one executed in the very beginning.

Not that either. Hm. Time for yet an other hint: it was the writers son who stitched the story together from a great many fragments.

An ill-tempered, selfish outcast is mysteriously transported to a fantasy world where he is hailed as the reincarnation of a legendary hero despite his reluctance to accept the role or care about anything including the new life this land provides for his body and soul.

Well, let's see if someone else guesses right. There was some mention of a mythical creature some years back called 'Rules', a very talkative beast it seems. It said that when you had had a correct guess you had to pass over the next challenge. Now, I don't know what powers this monstrosity has, so I'll better keep mum for the time being.

Given the fairly low level of participation in this thread, and the fact that others have had an opportunity to respond but have not done so, I'd say answer away.

Let's try this one:

Very long shot: maybe 'dragon riders of pern'? Read it some fifteen years ago, can't remember much.

Yes, it seems right to me.
The princess is Lessa of Ruatha Hold, to be married to F'lar when Mnenenth rides ... rides .., oh well, rides Lessa's Queen dragon.

Nope. As I remember it, Lessa didn't want to be a dragonrider. At any case, this princess wants to slay dragons, not to ride them.

Another clue: The princess' partner in her quest is an old warhorse.

A longer quote:

"All royal members have a magical talent but the king's only daughter lack it. Also, she wants to be a dragonslayer which isn't a job suitable for a princess. She gets her wish but with unexpected consequences. Her loyal companion in her quest is an old warhorse."

The old warhorse, is that an old veteran combat soldier or an actual four-legged horse?
