it's been years since i've read ERB but if i ever have any doubts about whether or not he was more than a hack author of pulp fantasy all i have to do is read something like that.

good stuff.

I will take a small liberty here - and record sE's score for his answer to HD's sherlock - nice work super - also awarding him a score at the same time for my own recent question:

Q: What book was this?
A: Earth by David Brin

for details - check out the thread here

kilt

btw - HD's stumper above - I agree with BKM - illustrates beautifully the great skill of ERB - I did recall the phrase myself - but I did not know who what or where - so I could not even venture a guess - even though I badly need the point!

Eventhough I am a newbie I will try my hand at this, you'll probably all guess it though.

What stephen King Novel depicts a town, name is changed in the book obviously, which he lived in for a while?

Well, ther are a bunch of google results for "school motto "Per Angusta, Ad Augusta" "

Knowing where you say you live makes me want to say A school called Takapuna Grammar School, just because it is New Zealand.

PS: WTH is a "Sherlock" anyway?
I posed the question - MF came close enough to obtain ½ a point - so the scoreboard stands @

MidasKnight: 1

DOH!

I have to confess here that my previous score was in fact -1 so the leaderboard actually is:

Brad: 4
SuperEnigmatix: 2
Trebor: 1
Holmes: 1
MidasKnight: 1
Uncle Beard: 1+1 possible
Torybear: 1 from Modesitt Quote Game
Crispind: 1 from Modesitt Quote Game
Magicfan241: 1/2
Kilt: -1

Thanks for doing the update Aunflin :!:

I am keen to encourage everybody to be "owners" of the sherlock scoreboard - that way I won't feel like I have to make sure I catch every piece of every game going on... Not that I don't want to - But I have started to realise this board is going to get bigger than 1 person! ;)

Bravo! Another Sherlock for ToryBear. It's from the end of In Endless Twilight. Your turn to quote Tory.

P.S. Gerswin's actually talking to a young lady who looks like Caroljoy (not the Custodian), but I didn't ask for who he was talking to (and she was only off by one Chapter), so I say it counts.
Including the Sherlocks awarded by Superenigmatix, Crispind, and myself, I believe the new standings would be:

Brad: 4
SuperEnigmatix: 2
Uncle Beard: 2
Torybear: 2 from Modesitt Quote Game
Trebor: 1
Holmes: 1
MidasKnight: 1
Crispind: 1 from Modesitt Quote Game

One more for jwebster.

Oh, this is fun! Wish I could get here regularly!
The book is The Order War and the conversation is between Justin and Gunnar toward the end of the book when Justin shows Gunnar how to balance the order and chaos in his own body : )
Right?
And a first one more for Ean143.

The new standings are:
