Hmmmm... that post looks strange, on the top of a new page!
It was a comment on Kurt's post:

Oh, Suzette, BTW, since we now know it is not in ACC at all, what character did you have in mind, if not Richars?

It's one of the undeveloped older Vor characters, mentioned in passing. Richars was nasty, but we see too much of him in ACC for him to foam at the mouth, and only have one quote about it. Offhand, I can't remember if it's a Count or an Auditor, but I think it's one of the more obscure Counts.

... there's a time limit? Well, I guess that makes sense. And I think it just passed, so:

The Vor Game, during the shuttle ride to extract Miles and Gregor from the fleet. It's Miles, talking to Elena about Count Vortrifrani, and the likely consequences of Gregor not making it back to Barrayar alive.

(Is it bad I knew all this off the top of my head?)

Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

You blew it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The time limit applies only to the person who asked the quote you had just answered, namely Caroline!

Not to you! Of course you know the answer to your own question!!!!

I should have made that clearer, but I did not expect Caroline to mention that rule, nor your reacting thus to her mentioning it.

The rule is to prevent the game from becoming a two-person one ("ping-pong") with two players exchanging quotes rapidly without anyone having a chance to "put a line in sidewise". This one has already been asked!
So for the first five days anyone may answer except the person who asked the previous quote (Caroline in this case). After 5 days, this person is allowed to answer, but the asker of the quote (you in this case) is never allowed at all, of course!!!!
Then (or even before the 5 days have passed, but not before 3-4 days, let us say), if there is no answer, the asker can give hints. If after giving 3 or 4 hints over 2-3 weeks (the limit is not strict) there is still no answer, then by common consensus the quote is called "cold". Then another one is offered (either by the person who aked the quote that just got cold or someone else) but still the asker does not answer it but leaves it for indeterminate time. If someone finds it even years later, (s)he still gets a full sherlock, but of course solving a cold quote does not allow to ask a new question, the next question being asked by whoever answers the quite which is "active" at a given point of time.

This puts us in an unprecedented situation. On the other hand, there are not so many of us, so we can reach a consensus. I think we should collectively act as umpires, this concerns the regular players of this game more than the administrators of hte whole site.

Caroline, did you actually have the correct answer?
If you answer positively, does any of us, namely Suzette, James, Blackwing, risi if she is still around, Reede Kullervo (ditto), Ragua if (s)he (?) is still around, marcyb (ditto again), or even unfrequent players, Ghost, gollum... anyone I have forgotten... object to trusting her and keep the game going as if she had actually answered (I do not object)? Or should Kurt ask a new one? (then I think Carloine should at least be dispensed from the 5-days rule and allowed to answer immediately)

Edit

BTW since we are discussing rules:
Kurt (is it OK to call you so? your full username is too long, but we ca nuse your real name, like SPetty/Suzette, JKCade/James, or call you KM like RK for Reede Kulervo) one can ask optional bonus questions in addition. Answering bonus is worth half a sherlock and does not allow to posrt a new quote. Thus if the bous is not a spoiler for the main question there is no 5-days rule for it. The perso nwho asks the bonus should normally make that clear. Even if the bonus is a spoiler if the correct answer to a question is given before 5 days, the person who asked the previous question can answer the bonus immediately after, no need to wait till the completion of the 5 days. Old, cold bonuses ca nof course be answered at any time by everyone, even the person whose question is active.
There are at the present no unanswered old questions worth a full sherlocks, but there are two unsanswered cold bonuses, worth 1/2 sherlock each. One by me, one by Caroline. Here they are, for you to solve if you want (and can ;) )

viewtopic.php?p=1840978#1840978
the genus is Panthera; there are no more tigresses (I think) but there are (at least) three more instances, for two different female animals of the Panthera genus. I want two instances, whether of the same species or not.

The main question was about Elli compared to a tigress in _EoA_, that was answered long ago.

and this one by Caroline

Except that Kurt already posted the answer. (I was actually looking for my copy of Young Miles, but didn't look hard enough yesterday.) The reason I thought it might have been in ACC is because I thought Miles was talking to a woman about it, and Ekaterin seemed the logical choice.

I think perhaps Kurt should post a new one, if he doesn't mind. That's been the usual reaction when this misunderstanding happens, I think, though generally, someone else hasn't posted that they know the answer in the other circumstances I've seen. *shrug* I guess either way is fine with me.

The rules of the game are summarized in the first post of the game thread, if you're interested, though I think voralfred summarized them pretty well in his post.

Didn't expect Kurt to react that way either. Yes, I had the right passage, and I sent a PM to him to answer (though I misnamed the actual speaker, thinking it was Elena, I would have checked if I had to post the answer), but I think Kurt is still the one who should ask the next quote, and I wouldn't mind still being bound by the 5-days rule. It's not too easy to be sure of the rules when you're new to the game. Choice up to Kurt, I think, collegial decisions being harder to achieve ?

Well, if Caroline doesn't mind:

Kurt, could you please post a new quote, and be precise as to what constitute the answer (for instance: must one specify the speaker, or just the general context?)
You can, for instance, demand more details for a bonus, so a player who answers by guessing from some vague memory might just get one point, but finding the exact passage allows to get the full one and a half.
Alternatively, a bonus can be only vaguely related to the quote, and not be a spoiler. Of course, there does not need to be a bonus at al, most of the time there isn't one.
Whatever happens, never give the answer to your own quote! It can always be answered later, even if declared cold.

Caroline: I really think the 5-days rule should not apply this time.

Damn, sorry - completely misinterpreted things. I only read about half-way through the first page of the thread, so went with what I thought was the likely interpretation of "5-day rule."

OK, new quote, uh ... give me a minute here.
... and the Barrayaran prime minister’s son would have acquired an instant reputation as a young man with serious emotional difficulties ...

This one should be much easier. Just looking for identification of book and general scene (it's during an easily specified event).

Book: Brothers in Arms

At the Barrayaran Embassy on Earth, Miles sees a goldfish in hte fountain that is not interested by breadcrumbs, and considers crushing it under his foot to see whether it is a Cetagandan spying device... in front of all the guests.

Win.

I was considering going with the "he didn't like situations that came capitalized" bit, but liked the fountain scene better.

You are supposed to give me a sherlock, just as Caroline gave you one.
And you are to wait for five days before answering this quote, after which you are allowed to. No need for you to wait to answer the quote after mine even if mine is answered very rapidly, and the next one asked well within five days of now. I'll be the only one to have to wait to answer the next quote.
There was a thoughtful pause. In a voice of simple honesty, XXX replied, "No, YYY."
Book?
XXX?
Who asked the question that got this answer, i.e., what character is referred to as YYY here? It is OK if you answer by guessing and do not give the exact form of YYY in this precise sentence.
What is this all about?

Consider a Sherlock duly awarded (I'm assuming I just have to say so in-thread).

Well, in principle you were supposed to do it on the sherlock thread. Since you said so here, I did it myself for this time, but the normal etiquette is for the asker to do it. Have a look, so you can do it next tiem.

Well, if there is no answer in 5 days.... Still, you should post the correct answer yourself as soon as the 5 days go by, if you don't react rapidly and someone else posts after 5 days but before you do, there is a problem as to who gets the sherlock, so don't take chances.

I sympathize with your plight, Kurt ^^

Let's guess : Pym in ACC, when just after Miles's memorable dinner Cordelia asks him I he cares to explain the situation. XXX is Pym, YYY Mylady or such, I think.

OK, OK, now you can post a new one, and the plight of waiting will fall on me!

(I just gave you your :sherlock:, by editing my post rather than copying it, so it does not appear as a new post, but it is there)
Also: Horizon is still out-of-bounds! It was not yet published when we last voted on what is allowed and what is not!!!!! :P

Good, because my copy is still not here. :( It's been within 20 minutes of my house since Thursday at 11pm (package tracking is a mixed blessing sometimes). I already warned my husband that I'm either going to be exceptionally irritated tomorrow, or exceptionally distracted by my new book, depending on how things go.

Edited to add: option number 1. I'm tempted to drive there and demand my book.

Hmmm... we seem to have lost the last week or two of posts with the server move. That one was Paladin of Souls with Arhys talking to Catti about letting them question her demon. The current one is:
"No, I don't. I do know that in all our conversations the subject was never once brought up. Ever."
"Hm. Wish I knew how to interpret that. It sounds a little ominous. Do you think you could ask...?"
What book?
Who speaks first?
Who speaks second?

In lieu of another extension (which, I feel, will either give it away too quickly, or not really be of much help), I'd prefer to hint.

It's from the Vorkosiverse.

I posted it in the middle of last week (maybe last Tuesday?), so I'm fairly sure the limit is up. Feel free to answer. For that matter, it's been 5 days since I reposted it, so you're definitely covered.

Ok, so I think it's in "Barrayar". Aral speaks first, then Cordelia. They're talking about Koudelka's injuries, how poorly his nerves have been repaired, which might explain the difficulty of his relationship with Drou.
