Correct Caroline - you're up!
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you,

Ok, so next one isn't too hard :
"It is murmured that the thumb is sacred to the Bastard because it is the part He puts upon the scales of justice to tip them His way"
Not only book and speaker, but exact context and the following sentence.

If you were only asking book and speaker, I'd say
- definitely Paladin of Souls rather than any of the two others books on the World of Chalion
- most probably something that dy Cabon would say

But I went through the whole book, page by page (but, of course, not reading, just skimming through hoping the quote would somehow catch my eye), except the part between the Jokonan attack and the return of Foix and dy Cabon, and did not find it. Either I missed it, or it is in the part I skipped, uttered by someone else (Ista?).

I didn't find it in Paladin of Souls either (didn't completely read the book, of course), or in Curse of Chalion (presumably in one of the discussions about death magic. I checked almost every instance of Caz telling his story and conversations with Umegat, but didn't find it). I was just about to assume it's in Hallowed Hunt, since you hadn't answered either (and I know you don't have that one). :)

Caroline Tredez wrote:So, next quote :
...unjust to use his daily gift of breath to complain about XXX
Whose "gift of breath" ? In which book ? What's XXX ? Context ?

Bonus : Somewhere else, someone else shouldn't "use [his] gift of breath to complain of [something]" : Who, Where, and what's [something] then ?
While looking for the quote, I found the bonus for this one: In Paladin of Souls, Ista advises Goram to use his gift of breath to complain of his limited time by the grave of Pejar, who died defending Arhys in his last ride.

Not only book and speaker, but exact context and the following sentence.
Book? Hallowed Hunt
Speaker? Learned Lewko
Following sentence? "There is more truth than humor in this joke."
Context? Lewko asked Ingrey why he didn't simply "lose" Hallana's letter, and Ingrey said he could ask the same question of Lewko, that his adherence to rules "flexes oddly."

(just got Hallowed Hunt from the library last night. ;) )

Perfect, Spetty, you're up !

I didn't think that one would last 9 days, as the serie and the fact that the speaker had to be a divine of the bastard seemed pretty obvious.

Well, as I said, neither voralfred or I have that particular book. And the Bastard makes a larger appearance in Paladin of Souls. :)

Next quote:
"If you expect to open a can of worms," he spoke aloud for the first time, "you'd best trouble to pack a can-opener."
Book?
Speaker?
What is the "can-opener"?

Memory

Miles (talking to himself)

"can opener" can be understood short-term or long term
-short term: wearing all his medals, in order to convince Gregor to grant him his log-term aim, namely
-having an Imperial Auditor affectd to the case (which, in hte end, was himself)

God, and I thought I'd been in deep sh*t before.

Book?
Who thinks this deep thought?
Some context.

Edit:
A bonus which is in itself a hint, or a hint in form of a bonus:

If in giving the context you give me the two precise sentences that I am waiting for, you get an extra half-point

You can still win just one full point and the next quote by a less precise context, from memory
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

Quote:
God, and I thought I'd been in deep sh*t before.

Book? The Vor Game
Who thinks this deep thought? Miles Vorkosigan
Some context. Miles has just awakened from a nap while waiting out a wah-wah in the survival gear. Unbeknownst to him, the motor pool crew has suggested he anchor his scat cat in a certain area for shelter from the wah-wah, but this particular area is actually a Permafrost Invasion Zone, which turned into muddy quicksand while he was asleep and has sucked him and his tent down into the ground, threatening to suffocate him.

James, you are correct and get a full sherlock and to ask the next quote.
However, you did not quote exactly what I was expecting, so the half point bonus is still out for grabs.... ;)

Voralfred : were you, per chance, thinking of : "He'd feared the black mud would pour in, drowning him at once, but it only crept in extrusive blobs, to fall with oozing plops. The comparison was obvious and repulsive." ?

And in the general spirit of the topic at hand, here is the next quote,,,

"That's 'dipsh*t,' " Xxx, laboring back by the hatch trying to make it seal, corrected helpfully.
Book?
Who is Xxx?
Who is Xxx talking to?
What is going on?

Wierdly, I actually opened the book at random and found this one, it was just too good to be true!

Can't find the book just now, so by guess :

Book : Brothers in Arms
Xxx : Private Danio (?) , talking to Miles who came to rescue some of his Dendarii from an ill-advised attempt at taking an hostage to get alcohol (Dendarii accounts being too low to support even so little a purchase)

I'm not even sure I've read that one in english, so I'm quite uncertain.

A little more.
"You bent one of the rings, you dipstick. You better hope it's theirs and not ours.

"That's 'dipsh*t,' " Xxx, laboring back by the hatch trying to make it seal, corrected helpfully.
Book? Falling Free
Who is Xxx?Jon (one of the quaddies)
Who is Xxx talking to?Zara, who's trying to dock after Ti bent the coupling rings
What is going on?They're trying to hijack the superjumper so that the quaddies can be free (instead of stuck downside like the company wants them to be)

Sorry for the delay. My access is somewhat limited by teenagers on the weekend (and when I did get access, I admit, I forgot completely).

Next quote:
"Weeping because you have no more worlds to conquer?" inquired Xxx with a sarcastic grin.
Which book?
Who is Xxx?
Who is weeping and why?
