My real problem here is that I can't find my copy of Irresistable Forces, because I'm 90% sure it's about Winterfair Gifts, and the thank-you is for the pearl necklace that made Ekaterin sick, but without the copy of the book, all I can tell you is that the guy's last name is Vor something. ;) I presume Miles is asking ImpSec if they'd finished tracing the package after finding the necklace is poisoned.

Of course, I could be completely wrong, but that's the book I thought of as soon as Catherine posted it.

Caroline, not Catherine, but don't sweat it, I don't care (I like Catherine, for that matter).

You're right, SPetty, and I won't stop at a name (Vorbataille), all the rest was correct. I'll post your sherlock tomorrow.

Oops! For the record, I'm pretty sure I was thinking "Caroline". My fingers must not be listening very well. Sorry!

Anyway, next quote:
He didn't recall seeing any monsters around. "Where?"
What book?
Who is "He"?
Where is he?

Again _WG_? Roic having lost Taura overhearing some discussion of some very provincial Barrayarans?

Couldn't you at least pretend it was so as a Winterfair Gift to me?

Well, I could, but I try very hard not to pick the same book as the previous quote, and the syntax doesn't work for your scenario [the "he didn't recall seeing any monsters around" is kind of a thought (though not italicized, oddly enough,) and if it were Roic's thought, he would be in the conversation, not overhearing it, and he wouldn't have thought of Taura as a monster except when she first arrived].

So even if I did pretend you got it right as a Winterfair gift, someone else would have caught it eventually. Sorry. :(

The "monsters" are in two books.

Wow, I'm impressed by how sufficiently vague that is. :)

Just two books? Or two novels plus a cameo in one novella?

I'm reasonably sure it's just two books. I found no instance of this particular "monster" in a novella (not even Labyrinth).

Blind guess: book is _DI_, "he" is Miles, on Graf Station in Quaddiespace, but the "monster" is not a Quaddie, but a Ba.

Another guess, since five days have elapsed : the monster is a ba, but the sentence is said on Cetaganda, after Rian told Miles the Haut ladies experiments on humans. She's about to add, following Miles' enquiry, that they test their ideas on the ba.

Caroline got it right, though I might quibble about it being experimentation ON humans. It's really experimentation with human DNA (and who knows how human the Cetagandans are by this point).

Your sherlock, Caroline, and your turn to put up a quote.

Who are we, indeed?
Besides Caroline, Suzette and I?
Francis, James, yoohoo?
:hot: :hot: YOOHOO!!!!!! :hot: :hot:
The others, I am afraid, are not coming back, but when we were still five, there was more competition.
Anyway, Caroline, what about a little hint? If it is down to Suzette and I at this point, it seems that neither of us have guessed, so far...

OK. I'll take a shot at it.

Martya says it about the butterbugs.

Naw, not Martya, no butterbugs, but you've won an extension :
"Oh, great," came a disgusted reply. "Just what we need right now."
"Hey, at least it's something we can shoot," another voice remarked wistfully.

The book is Diplomatic Immunity. "It" is the renegade Ba, and "we" refers to the Barrayaran medtechs aboard the Idris (who are working on the Cetagandan biological weapon that they can't just shoot).

And you should know by now that I try not to pick easy quotes. :P

rogerstenning, welcome to the forum and to the game!
In principle you should have waited to guess a quote before proposing your own, but you are new so we are not going to begrudge you for your ehthusiasm (well, maybe Suzette? :( No, I am sure she does not mind :D ).
In the meantime I checked that she was indeed right, so Caroline will give her her Sherlock.
So let us say your quote is the current one, but please next time wait until you be the first to guess a quote before posting a new one.
