After all, if I am right, someone might guess my new quote before I leave, and anyway I won't be away from the web so long. So, with James' help, it was clear it could only be _Shards of Honor_, thus He=Aral, I=Cordelia.

To save time, here is my new quote (in the unlikely case I am wrong, just ignore it).
God, I'm in love, thought Xxx.
Book?
Xxx?
Whom is he/she/it in love with?
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

Ahem... risi PMed me I asked that before. Appaently I like that passage, and my Alzheimer is getting worse and worse. So forget that. here is another one:
"What the hell are you?"
"Nothing you need to be afraid of. Whatever you're hiding from, it isn't me. You can have my word on that, if you wish."
Book?
First speaker?
Second speaker?

Bonus: what did the first speaker guess about the second one?

Edit: in conformity with the explicitation of the rules as proposed by risi and amended by me, I'd say that in the present case the pingpong 5-days rule applies also to the bonus, as it is too strongly related to the main question; that is, SPetty can't answer even the bonus alone for 5 days, unless the main question is answered first, without the bonus. In that case she'll be allowed to answer the bonus at once without having to wait for the completion of the 5 days. This is a case-by-case situation, for bonuses. Other bonuses might be answered at once, if they are not dead giveaways for the main question.

Obviously, you're correct about the quote. Would you have known it straight off without JKCade's hint, or did the copyright date help? (Just curious. I'm not sure I would have recognized it right away personally.)

Gah, while typing about the fact that I didn't recognize the quote, I recognized the quote. So don't expect to see me for a bit, because I don't want to give any hints away (can't answer till Saturday? And I won't be home Saturday).

No, as a matter of fact, before James inadvertent hint about the year, I was wondering which of Miles' women could have said that. Or maybe even, Lilly Junior in Mirror Dance - definitely not a woman of Miles'. But 1986 left little choice!

You can answer as early as Friday 7:09 PM forum time which I beleive is GMT-5. Did I post it at 2 am? Yes, I remember I woke up in the middle of the night.

I just wanted to let others know that there is a discussion going on about gathering all the rules into one place and clarifying them. voralfred has already jumped in with some great feedback, but I would like to have more folks involved, or at least know that they are in agreement.

The discussion starts here and let's try to keep it there instead of here. I just want to be sure everybody knows about it. :)

Well, I've been leaving this one for someone else since I'm too busy at present to check it, but here's my guess:

Warrior's Apprentice.
Baz Jesek
Miles

Bonus: he discovered that Miles is Vor... because of the "my word" thing.

I think that would be the best story all around, yes.
Book?
Who says this?
To whom?

Bonus:
What was the story?

I can think of about five spots in various books that would fit this quote. This one's going to require research.

Since this is somewhat vague, I'll add a hint early:

This is not from the Vorkosigan Universe.

Here's more of the quote:
"I think that would be the best story all around, yes."

XXX gave a little growl that reminded YYY suddenly of ZZZ. "Plain enough there's more to it. Have it in hand, do you?" xxx turned again to walk up the lane side by side with YYY.
Book?
Who speaks 1st (YYY)?
Who speaks 2nd (XXX)?
Who is ZZZ?

xxx is the gender-appropriate pronoun

Bonus:
What was the story?

hint:

This is not from the Vorkosigan Universe.

Book?Beguilement
Who speaks 1st (YYY)?Dag
Who speaks 2nd (XXX)?Sorrel (Fawn's father)
Who is ZZZ?Fawn

Bonus:
What was the story? How Sunny and his friends got hurt in the woods (rather than the true story that they tried to get rid of Dag and leave Fawn thinking Dag left, but that Dag beat them all).

I did check it on amazon, but it was where I thought it was. :)

I wonder if that counts as confirmation... ;)

I was going to guess it earlier this morning, but decided to wait (since it was a guess at that point. I decided to check it later).

Book? = Winterfair Gifts
Who is speaking? = Roic
Who else is there? = Miles, who has just said that he wants Taura to have an experience like Cinderella

Okay, this one is pretty easy, but I've been too distracted by RL to come up with a tougher quote, so here goes:
"One step at a time...I can walk around the world. Watch me."
Who is speaking?
To whom is the person speaking?
What is the context?

The ellipses indicate a tiny bit of snippage in order to make it not so easy. In the unlikely event that people have trouble with it, I'll put it back. (The snippage does not alter the meaning of the quote.)

"FOUND IT!", again, he cried, looking desperatly at the previous post to make sure no one had beaten him again 8)

"One step at a time...I can walk around the world. Watch me."

Who is speaking? Aral Vorkosigan
To whom is the person speaking? Piotr Vorkosidan
What is the context? They are discussing the clean up details after Vordarian's Pretendership, specifically a count who "took instant and effective exception to this violent swing to the over-progressive" of an anti-Vor group who declared an independent republic in the chaos. Vorkosigan left the matter to the count and his district militia, declining to involve Imperial troops in a non-Imperial issue.

I don't know about a record, lol, I do know that was one of my favorite lines from any of the books. I tend to think Aral and Cordelia have some of the best lines.

Well, I don't really know but since no one else has come up with anything, I'll make a wild guess:

Beguilement
Dag
Fawn

It just doesn't sound like something from the V-saga. Ista would never say this and I can't imagine anyone having the nerve to say it to her. So the only other pair of characters I can think of (that are dealing with grief) are Dag and Fawn. Pure guess.
