Some turns of phrase come easily under LMB's pen (or typewriter). A third quote with "to answer for".
All XXX could think was, Whoever first brought yyys to ZZZ has much to answer for. ...
Book?
Who is XXX?
What are yyys?
What, or rather where is ZZZ?

Speaking of recurring phrases, Blackwing's last quote that James found sent me on a wild goose chase. I remembered a homework well done, but that was somewhere else. So now I offer it for a half-point bonus. Since it is totally unconnected with the main question, (only the "recurrence" relates them) anyone, including James, may answer it at any time, even without answering the main question.
Someone had been doing their homework, for XXX murmured, "Ooh, my favorite."
Book?
XXX?
favorite what?

Not getting the sherlock quote, but I distinctly remember this one:
Someone had been doing their homework, for XXX murmured, "Ooh, my favorite."
Book? Cetaganda
XXX? Maz (the Barrayaran ambassador's future wife)
favorite what?Dessert (either chocolates, or pastries, can't remember which)

Correct on all counts!

One sherlock and a half and the next quote is yours.
Hey! You did it! You are ahead of Blackwing by 1/2 point...

I suppose an extension is in order. :)
"I saw a couple of people walking, " volunteered Xxx. "At a distance, across the pond. They were looking at us, but I doubt they could see much."
"We were a hell of a show, for a few minutes."
"What happened this time, Yyy?"
What book?
Who is Yyy?
Where was the show?

Five days since the original post... good!
The short quote baffled me, but the "pond" did it... not so many books on planets, also no ponds on Beta!

Book: Mirror Dance
YYY= Rowan
and the "show" happened just ouside the Durona facility on Jackson's Whole.

Book? Brothers In Arms
Who says that? Admiral Miles Naismith
Who are "them"? Private Danio, Yalen, and Private Xaveria. These three have just attemped to hold up a liqour store in London after the credit card machine has denied them credit, as they didn't listen to Lt Bone's instructions regarding how to use them properly to avoid that very type of incident.

Xxx snorted. "You haven't changed, have you? Still insatiably curious. To a fault," Xxx added pointedly.

Book?

Book? Diplomatic Immunity
Who is Xxx? Pel (the Cetagandan haut from Cetaganda)
Who is Xxx speaking to? Miles, of course :)

I almost guessed ACC at the Emperor's wedding, but then, Miles didn't have much to arouse his curiosity at that point. :) Perhaps I should self impose the 5 day limit even when it wasn't just me. I just noticed how many of the last ones were my guesses.
