"I must have a brief consultation with my Fleet accountant," XXX temporized. "I will return your call shortly."
"How else?" YYY1 YYY2 murmured, with a small smile at his own wit.
Book ?
XXX ?
YYY ? (it appears as two words in the quote, but any unambiguous designation will do, no need to give the exact wording)

Hint: YYY's "wit" can help to guess who XXX is.

Pseudo-Bonus :
Any player can answer this at any time since it has nothing at all to do with the main question.
This will not bring any point since the answer is not objective but subjective. Just my feelings of mind-siblingness (?) for the player who thinks like me.

The six first Penric stories have been published, three by three, in two collections "Penric's Progress" and "Penric's Travels"
One of these titles, for me, rings a bell about a particular episode involving a particular character, in a much earlier work.

So what am I thinking about ?
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

..."Good God," he repeated. He chewed his lip in fascination, dull eyes briefly alight with honest curiosity. "What's he really like?"

Book?
Speaker?
Who is he speaking to?
Who is the "he" the speaker is asking about?

I'll have to pass on the bonus, nothing springs to mind.

Sorry! Off topic but important.

Uncle Hugo's destroyed by arson!

Uncle Hugo's has been kind of Lois Bujold's unofficial base of operations.
Has been.
The loss of this treasure trove is tragic, almost as disastrous as the destruction of the library of Alexandria ...

I agree with you. This senseless act of vandalism has destroyed irreplaceable ancient editions, signed copies by authors some of who are dead... The fire at library of Alexandria was probably an accident (a bit late to investigate the exact happenings at that time; Caesar did deliberately set fire to some ships for tactical reasons, but it is not clear that the spread of the fire to the shore and the library was his aim), but this was deliberate. Shame on our generation.

Alas, history has shown that those who burn books often go on to burn people.

That's fine - I figured the Uncle Hugo's message deserved top billing for a bit longer anyway.

"Actual combat . . . is a lot stupider than I'd imagined. If two groups can cooperate to the incredible extent it takes to meet in battle, why not put in a tenth that effort to talk?"

Who says this?
To whom?
In what story?

Extending the quote somewhat:
"Strange," said XXX, looking at YYY ... "to think you've had more combat experience than either of us."

Ooops !
I mistakenly edited my original question instead of quoting it, so the date was not changed. So I now repost it with a new date. The original form is lost but this has no importance

First hint - a "minor" correction:

Who is XXX?
What tale?

Second hint - some prior context
He'd seen men go berserk a few times, in the madness of battle. He'd just never imagined what it must feel like from the inside, before.... You know what you did to XXX. Now you know what XXX is doing to you.

"Like XXX, I yyyed. Like XXX, I found it was not the improvement I'd hoped for."
yyy is a verb (a regular one, hence -ed)

Book ?
XXX ?
yyy ?
Who says this ?
To whom ?

Bonus :
Who else is present ?

Sorry, sorry, this has been asked already, I should have checked before.
You can check for "improvement" in this thread with "Advanced Search" for details.
Consider it as null and void.
I'll ask a new one presently

OK, so here is the correct new quote.
But the view (...) was luminous and beautiful—he waved at XXX, (...)—and the sea wasn’t bad to look at, either.
I have shortened the quote and replaced some details by (...) twice.

Book ?
Who is "he" ?
XXX ?

Pseudo bonus for no points but just to know if you agree with what I think:
What is the "beautiful view", if not the sea ?
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine
