Holly Lisle - Ruby Key, The - 7

Ruby Key, The /Moon & Sun /1

The Ruby Key is a quick-paced young adult fantasy novel that is well written and fairly engaging. The author has created a complex and rich fantasy world and immerses the reader into it with very little in the way of explaining the nuances of her creation. Instead, the reader is gradually introduced to the elements of this world as the characters come into contact with various situations and does not have to sit through lengthy explanations of how things work here.

The plot and story move along at a brisk pace as the two main characters go from a mission to find a cure for their sick mother's illness to a quest that will not only save their mother's life but also save all of those that they know and love. Lisle has a beautiful writing style and once I got into the first person mode of the storytelling, I truly enjoyed the flow of the novel.

This book is the first book of a series and I'm pretty sure that I will be continuing the series and will encourage my 12-year-old grandson to pick it up as well.
