Brown sauce and white sauce

Post by Mythbhavd »

Modesitt's books have been a long time favorite with me. One thing I've noticed is his delight in lamb with brown sauce or white sauce (both spicy). I've seen the white sauce called Winterspice and the brown Burkha in several. I love cooking and I've always wanted to try out one of these recipes. So, here's my question. Is there a recipe for either?

Sauces

While some of the dishes in my books I have actually prepared, burhka and the white lamb sauce are not one of them. I have a good idea how I might prepare them, but since I've never tried, I'm not about to publish either -- they could turn out to be absolutely ghastly.

If you ever do give them a try, I'd love to know how they turn out. :)

I would think any admitted fan with a modicum of culinary interest would like to try any recipe that is not ghastly.

In any case, Mr. Modesitt could always post some proposed ingredients, then truly devoted fans could act as guinea pigs.

Win-win.

There was burkha discussion over on this thread viewtopic.php?t=2082&highlight=recipes a while back ...

It sort of start out as general food - went to burkha for a while - and then swung back out to a broader food-list again.

I'm rereading The Mongrel Mage as a refresher before jumping into Outcasts of Order. As always, I'm fascinated by the foods that your characters eat and, as a lover of meat pies, can't help but think about how Meldyn prepares his beef and fowl pies. But, after reading a list of items packed in the basket to help Beltur get in the door with Margrena, I have to say, "Thou shalt not put raisins in thy cookies." Confections 1:1 I mean, really! That is just smacks of chaos.

Chaos or not, I happen to like oatmeal raisin cookies.

Ah...and now we have an explanation for how those typo's occur.
Chaos in the printer from oatmeal raisin cookies, for shame.

So, when I recently reread Outcasts or Order, I noticed that they ate a cassoulet. I decided to give it a go. I found what looks to be a great recipe and am going to fix it tomorrow. I can’t wait to taste it.

Wow! That was a great meal. It’s time intensive, but it pays off in the end.

I gotta get on board with Rhenn's father in the first three Imager novels... there's nothing better than a leg of lamb with crispy edges.

An apropos quote for all the Princess Bride fans out there...

Miracle Max: Sonny, true love is the greatest thing in the world, except for a nice MLT – mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich - where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe. They're so perky. I love that.

Hey Mr. M - Out of curiosity, are you a fan of The Princess Bride, or any other of William Goldman's works?

I've seen The Princess Bride and enjoyed it, but I can't say that I'm a rabid fan.
