Dynamic Map of the World of Recluce, now online!

Post by tsaavik »

First off I would like to thank CodeBlower for the enormous amount of work he has done in alpha testing this project. There are almost two score (LOL) of emails going back and forth between the two of us. It seems like every time I fixed one problem I managed to break two other things.

So here is the result of many months of work. Its is a Dynamically generated user driven map of the Recluce universe!

Image
At this point many are wondering what the heck that means! It means we now have the opportunity to see where our adventurers are. And the most exciting thing is you get to help make this a complete reality! You see, that annoying red line (I will take suggestions on better html color codes gladly) is not drawn on the map. It is overlaid, automatically based on information from a wiki. The wiki system allows you to specify coordinates for each point along the map. Within 5 minutes of making a change you will be able to reload the page and see your addition/correction on the map!

Of course the Recluce universe is still growing (and changing city names and entire geographies) and the map is setup to handle this. I've filled in most of Chaos Balance and CodeBlower has done a good chunk of Magic of Recluce. The other books are waiting for readers to contribute! (Update: Most are done or have a good chunk in place)

So head over to http://www.hellspark.com/dm/maps/recluce/ select your continent and then book. There is also a link to the wiki to modify/read about the circles and dot at the bottom of the page. You can hoover over the dots for the descriptions and even click them to see all the wiki entries about that dot.

Please PM me if you have any comments/concerns/complaints.

3 week update

Post by tsaavik »

Well its only been 3 weeks since public release and here is where were are sitting:
  • The Magic of Recluce: 80%? complete.
The Towers of the Sunset: 100% Complete
The Fall of Angles: 100% they never GO anywhere!
    The Chaos Balance: 100% complete.
    The White Order: 90% complete
I'm finishing up The White Order myself and will start on The Magic Engineer next. I'm re-reading the books in chronological order and updating as i go. It SO much less confusing for me, and i find the "history books" to be quite humorous.

Right now Jellico of all places is winning as the most common point between the books added so far (go figure!). :D

pretty frickin sweet now if only we could get an awesome artist to do map of the past and make changes to them i read somewhere that it would be rather expensive but i think that it was because you would have to put them in every book i guess making just one on ine would be relatively inexpensive (but i wouldnt know sense I'm not in the biz) maybe we could just kidnap an artist or something i saw an elephant artist the other day and he works for peanuts lol. I'm kidding cool map though

We've talked about that. But, as "you don't know unless you ask", it doesn't hurt to request it.

Our challenge is, mostly, the map quality. We're kind of stuck with whatever scans are available.

At least for now.

Although, if anybody has ideas on (1) how to get better maps and (b) how to get detailed maps of stuff we don't currently have available to us, I'm sure tsaavik would be delighted.

(We'll keep scyfer'elth'alt'mer's kidnapping idea in reserve for now.) ;)

You know a cool map would be one that shows Recluce split in half sense that's what happens after Lerris Binds order and Chaos.

Here is my monthly update :D
  • The Magic of Recluce: 80%? complete.
The Towers of the Sunset: 100% complete
The Fall of Angles: 100% they never GO anywhere!
    The Chaos Balance: 100% complete.
    The White Order: 100% complete
    The Magic Engineer: 100% complete
Colors of Chaos: 80% complete (Cerryl just rebuilt Elparta and is headed to Kleth,
I'm a little delayed plotting the lines here because I'm having trouble figuring out where exactly Axalt is. Sometimes it seems like its halfway between Elparta and Kleth (to the east of coruse) but other times it seems to be south of Elparta.
Since I'm re-reading the series in chronological order next up is Natural Ordermage. So I'll be forced to get that Hamor map up one way or another :D

I just thought I'd point out that in the Towers of Sunset, Creslin attacks Lydiar to seize ships as well.

You caught me! I do have that as an entry in the wiki page for the book but I hesitated to add it to the map since i thought it might look a little weird once it plotted it. I'm excited that people are looking at the maps for this level of detail :D

From the The Towers Of The Sunset wiki
Chapter CXXXIV raided port of Lydiar, took 3 ships. Not sure if this short jaunt is worth mapping since it would make things confusing...
If you want to update it and see if you like how it looks go for it! I'd love to see someone correct/improve my data!

The other BIG question for this book and others that perform Candar to Land' End boat trips is, which way do the boats go? I assumed they traveled around Recluce on the North side, but this is just a wild guess.

Fair enough, I didn't actually click on the maps. I can understand your reasoning for not including it. Also, although, I don't have the book in front of me, I'm pretty sure he took all five ships that were in the harbor, as well as destroying the wizards' keep.

Coincidently, I was also thinking about which way the ships would travel when I was looking at the map. You would think that it would depend on the wind patterns, which I believe go from west to east as well as the ice patterns in winter. After all in the Order War Gunnar (or someone else) talks about how often Land's End's harbor is closed due to ice. And, in the Magic Engineer, Diev's port is closed during the winter, as well (Maybe there is a line in the ME too because Dorrin travelled down to Southpoint/Nylan as did his brother).

Just to note, the lack of updates for "The Magic of Recluce" are my fault -- not tsaavik's. At this point, it's likely I won't get back to finishing them until mid-January.

If anybody else is reading TMoR, feel free to take over where I "abandoned camp" .. I tried to leave notes in the wiki.

As for the discussion on ship-travel, I'm guessing that (other than for specific things mentioned in the books) their paths were generally pretty straight -- if only to get there as fast as possible. But, as I'm less than nautically-proficient, that's a complete guess on my part.

Waiting for my paperback version of Mageguard to arrive, so i added some new features while I've been waiting!
  • 1. Directional arrows! - Now you can see which way people are going. (thanks go out to my co-worker cathy for donating some trigonometry to make the arrowheads look nicer)
    2. Hamor is online, and ready to be filled in! Yup, i have a scan of Hamor. The original is over 4MB! I still need to tweak the colors a bit so its not so grainy (the paper in my Natual ordermage book is pretty ugly when scanned at 600dpi)

Looks great bud.

I know it's a lot of work but any chance we will see some of the other series mapped out too?

tsaavik, I should have a couple hours tomorrow. I'll try to get my lazy butt back to finishing "Magic".

The Hamor portion of "Natural Ordermage", as I recall, should be about as interesting as the map for "Fall of Angels".

Talquin, I had wondered how much trouble it would be to do the "Ghost" series.

I think the hardest part of it is getting a decent scan of whatever continents constitute the world for the series you're wanting to map.

I *do* know that tsaavik had to do some basic calculations to convert the pixels (on the screen) to kays (from the books) -- but I assume there's enough information within the books of the other series Mr. Modesitt has crafted that we could come up with this.

I'm kind of putting words in tsaavik's mouth so maybe I'll hush now -- besides -- he's the one that's done most of the work on this so he's the one who really knows how much work is involved. I'm just playing the part of Lerris to his Sardit.

(Anybody need a breadboard?)

Haha, Cool deal codeblower let me know if you have any issues or anything! You might be able to search the other maps for existing coordinates (just click through the books and if you see a plot point on a city you want to use click on it and it should take you to the wiki page with the coordinates, then you can just copy and paste.

Its been a while, but i *think* Rahl goes from Lands end to Nylan for training, so a tad more interesting then FoA, but not much more! I Finished up Parafaith this weekend (REALLY enjoyed everything after the Mara portion of the book, glad i stuck with it!) and started Natural Order-mage, Rahl is currently... um... "spreading the love" with the locals in Lands end.

As for the ghost series. I've tried twice now to read it. I have trouble with alternative history books because, well, i hated history class.

START SOAPBOX
Which is odd since i LOVE watching the history channel. I think being bored to tears and brute force memorizing meaningless dates just turned me off on the whole thing. I mean sure, i knew the date that some prince got shot that started the world war, but hell if i knew WHY the world was a powder keg looking for a reason to go off.
END SOAPBOX

If i was to start another map i think i would lean towards the Spellsong cycle, but I've done no research on any of that yet, so who knows?

As for scans, i now have access to a 600dpi scanner, It makes lovely 4MB images. I'd like everyone to take a moment and wish good thoughts to my poor Natural Ordermage paperbook that performed the selfless sacrifice of letting me rip the map out of the binding. The entire time i was tearing i kept expecting my elementary school librarian to come flying out of some dark corner and attack me for my transgression.

Getting the "scale" of the map correct is key. Fortunately Mr Modesitt stated in no uncertain terms the sizes of Candar and Hamor in a IBDOF posting. He may have for other books as well, I would have to do some searching. Or failing that, we could beg for them :D

Anyone have any idea of the Cyador times? That's around Fall of Angels? or earlier?
In the 60’s, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

I never did that well in History class either. Some of the discussion in Johan Esbach's classes almost lost me occassionally, but I just pretended I was one of the slower students in the class and it went okay .. ;)

If you mean, "Where in the timeline of the saga does the stuff from Lorn's tale fall?", then there's a breakdown on my Recluce page: http://www.codeblower.com/recluce/recluce.asp (basically, there are 400 years between "Scion" and "Fall".

(Truth in advertising statement: There's a note at the bottom of my timeline-thingy that tells you that I actually stole the times from the "official" timeline.)

tsaavik: I tried just making updates and caught myself reading again -- doh! -- I'm still working on "Magic".

Candar: http://hellspark.com/dm/maps/recluce/candar.html

If anybody's got "The Magic of Recluce" handy and can take a look at Chapters 62 - 64 .. .. I'm "less than confident" of where I've charted Lerris' path.

The text says that the old wizard's road runs due east/west. I don't know how much to trust the "peaks" drawn on the map to determine where the road would be (to correlate where Lerris would encounter it "on the old road to Sarronnyn").

I picked a "path" that generally seems to be in line with Freetown/Frven -- assuming the whole road was generally straight.

Is it close enough for now, or do I need to "re-calculate" before I go any further?

This is one of the coolest things I've seen online concerning the Recluce series - One of my favorite fantasy series. The maps are awesome. Is it okay if I reference them when the Goodreads SF and F group are discussing one F and one SF book from Modesitt. I'm sure the Fantasy book will be a Recluce novel!

Very cool! Let me know if you'd like a larger scan of Hamor.
Ideally I'd like a map that shows actual locations (with labels), but it would take some work to vectorize and annotate the map (a la Map of Lydar).
