Ratings

Post by gpackin »

I was just wondering why every book that I look up has a Rating of No votes? This shows up for all books, even for ones that I know have been rated. Once I submit a rating for a book it shows that there have been other votes cast. Then if I come back to the same book sometime later it shows No votes again. Are you aware of this glitch?

Thanks,
Greg

I'm not sure what has happened. This is not the first time teh average_ratings table has decided to clear itself for no reason that I can find in the code. I have re-updated all ratings in the table.

Someday, I will actually find the reason for the table deciding to be empty sometimes.

Welll, I experienced a slightly different version: two books (one of which I rated long ago, one I never rated, namely "The Anubis Gates" and "Declare" both by Tim Powers) both appeared with "No Votes" but when I rated both, they reappered with more than one vote (11 and 2 respectively).
So this is analogous to what gpacking had. But for me, the number of votes is still 11 and 2 now. Maybe he waited longer than I did...

I'll reset the ratings table and see if that helps at all.

This seems to be a recurring problem since WEM went live (I had posted a bug on it the first time I noticed). The underlying ratings don't disappear, but all books display as if they have no ratings, and continue to do so until either someone comes along and enters (or re-enters) a rating, or one of the admins forces a reset of the ratings table.

well, it's a simple enough process. I can access it from the Masters screen (similar to the Editorial Tools and Admin screens) and it takes about a minute and a half to run the script. Any time the problem crops up, just give a yell (I tend to respond quicker than Steven does during the day).

While I realize that I have absolutely no clue what you guys are talking about, if the data reappears when something is updated, that sounds like the data's really still there but that an index to that data has been lost/corrupted.

It just occurred to me that you guys may have already reasoned that out. If so, my apologies for stating the obvious. I enjoy this place quite a bit and feel that I do nothing to contribute - so thought I'd attempt to help, if I could.

should be fixed.

We have quite a few new users entering ratings. Could that be affecting things Scotty?

Yet again.

(I just hope this mysterious "resetting" is a simple task on your end.)

Fixed. Yes, it's a question of clicking a link. It does put a bit of load on the server, but it's simple and straightforward.
