Hallowed Hunt

Both book and character are correct, and you are right about it being a rank with authority... I don't think you can be more specific without the book in hand. Since no one else accepted your offer to take your conclusions and run with them, I take it as unanimous that the Sherlock is yours. And the next quote!

To risi; thanks and
OK so now next quote
Who is talking?
Who are "we"?
Who are "they"?

Book?Which do you think they'd rather believe, that we're great, or that they're a bunch of screw-ups?
Who is talking?
Who are "we"?
Who are "they"?
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

Got it finally!
After you posted the longer quote, I knew the book was "Mirror Dance", XXX was Miles and "she" was a Durona, but I was convinced "she" was Lilly, but the quote was not where it should have been.
Finally I got it: "she" is indeed a Durona, though not Lilly, but Rowan!
Hard one, that!

Book?"(...) I may be completely off-base, and panicking prematurely."
"I don't think so. I think you're panicking post-maturely. In fact, if you were panicking any later it would have to be practically XXXly. (...)"
Who are the two protagonists (in the correct order)
Bonus:
XXXly is an adverb. Which adverb?

Cetaganda, Miles and Ivan.
Bonus: Something like "post mortally"
Bonus: Something like "post mortally"
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you,

But as for the bonus.. from one who has been there, I would have expected better. Want to give another try?

New quote:
"X," Y breathed, closing his eyes. "How, God, have I sinned against You, that You have given me X—here. . . ."
God not deigning to answer, Y smiled crookedly and turned.

Thanks
What night-owls we are, both of us (assuming you are now in Croatia, not in the US or a place like that)
New quote
Book?
What character is XXX?
Who speaks first?
Who speaks second (YYY)
EDIT
Bonus:
1)What verb is ZZZ?
Hint: It is a verb that XXX is notorious for not doing, so you can guess it even without finding the exact passage.
2) On what occasion were these sentences uttered?
(This makes the bonus a bit harder, but is in fact a hint for the main question.)
(The exact forms of XXX1 or XXX2 are not required, you can give them if you want, but no extra bonus for that, the bonus is the verb and the occasion)

New quote
"So long, XXX1. ZZZ, dammit."
YYY added, "Take good care of yourself, XXX2, please? ZZZ, dammit." Their forms twinkled into thin air.
