"Have any clones ever xxxed?" YYY asked softly.
"No," he answered quickly, automatically.
"Except for your own clone, of course."
A dangerous turn in the conversation. "My clone did not xxx either. He was simply removed by his purchasers."
Book?
Who is YYY (speaks first and third)?
Who speaks second and last?
What verb is xxx? (once past participe, once infinitive; so you can answer by memory, I'll accept any reasonable synonym of the exact verb)
Bonus:
The turn in the conversation was indeed dangerous.
What did YYY find out about the other character? How?
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine
Voralfred: why don't you give the quote more than 24 hours before you deem the quote "too hard" and start giving out clues of more information.
Five days is the general waiting period before the previous poster can even guess and then in my humble opinion is the time to start expanding the quote. Be a little more patient.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you,
S Adams
Well, I'm going away for two weks soon. I really hope someone would find it before I leave. Moreover, I could have posted the longer form of the quote from the start, noone would have questioned my wisdom about the length of the quote. Besides it was more than 24 hours. We have a few experts around, risi (well, she has to wait for 5 days, of course), Blackwing, SPetty, maybe also JKCade who said he knew two of the previous answers but logged in too late, as someone else had already answered! I thought the very short quote was enough, there were a series of answers within 12 hours recently (Feb 01: 11 hours, Feb 09: 5 hours, Feb 11: 4 hours and again same day: 1 hour, Feb 12: 9 hours, Feb 13: 9 hours) and I thought this would again be the case. I really do not think the longer quote is ridiculously long. And if this does not suffice, I'll have to make it even easier soon, so the answer is found before sunday morning. I don't want to let people wait for two weeks for confirmation.
I always give a hint before the end of the 5 days, for the following reason: the entire rationale of the waiting period is to avoid the game to turn into a 2-players one. So the hint should help first the players who can answer, while the previous poster still cannot. If I did not have the sunday morning deadline I would have waited 3-4 days rather than about 30 hours (OK, I made a mistake, I mixed up am and pm, I thought it was almost 48 hours, instead of not quite 36), but certainly not 5 full days.
And speaking of humble opinion, my own humble opinion about games is that courtesy to the other players means that one should not make them wait too long, whether for extra hints, for confirmation, or for a new quote. Giving hints too early is not discourteous, just an admission you yourself made the question too hard. After all, the proponent of the original question could have made it easier from the start, so what harm about making it easier at any time?
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine
still I might decide to give another hint tomorrow, just to make the competition more lively.. (after all the Democrat's nomination campaign is more fun than the Republican's one, especially after Romney gave up) but not before 4 days after my initial quote
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine
Book? Mirror Dance
Who is YYY (speaks first and third)? Bel Thorne
Who speaks second and last? Miles
What verb is xxx? (once past participe, once infinitive; so you can answer by memory, I'll accept any reasonable synonym of the exact verb) Escape(d)
I'm afraid I don't have time to reread MD right now, so I'll have to leave the bonus for someone else.
The Princess Bride.
Not just your basic, average, everyday, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum fairy tale.
I am sorry but I cannot accept this answer.
Although it is mostly right, there is one very severe error, which has a lot to do with the bonus, by the way.
Blackwing, you still have time to correct it before risi has the right to answer. As for the other players, well...
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine
Yes, indeed, it was Mark mascarading as Miles, who let Bel use the word "clone" when Miles always corrected to "brother".
Welcome back, RK! Where have you been that long? We missed you.
Well, this is a bit of a dilemna: Blackwing did give most of the answer...
Let's put is so: RK gets the new question and the bonus, but the sherlock for the original question is split half and half. Blackwing gets 1/2, RK gets one (1/2 for the question, plus the bonus).
Your turn, RK!
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine
Well shoot, I had figured it was in MD, but I zoomed right past Bel and Mark speaking, trying instead to find the reference between Mark and Taura, or thinking it was in Memory, and looking at conversations between Miles and Simon after Miles was fired. That's what I get for getting in a hurry.
As I wrote on the On/off board, I'm off for two weeks.
I count on you, my good Dendarii, Blackwing, risi, Reede Kullervo, SPetty, to keep the thread alive.
JKCade, I'm happy you joined the fray. I hope you'll be happier about your time of logging in, not always just after the quote was found.
Of course everyone else is welcome to join, too, but we have a rather formidable team at the moment.
Beware of RK who just came back after a long absence, she is redoubtable. She lives in Croatia, but is a night owl. Well, even she has to sleep sometimes!
Havefun till I come back and I hope there are at least 3 or four quotes (or even more) found in these next two weeks!
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine
"... Still obsessed with a love affair that was over eighteen years ago. ..."
Book? Shards of Honor
Who said that? Admiral Aral Vorkosigan
To whom? the corpse of Admiral Ges Vorrutyer
Who was obsessed? Vorrutyer, still smatring over the loss of Aral as his lover and hating him therefore
"... Still obsessed with a love affair that was over eighteen years ago. ..."
Book? Barrayar
Who said that? Cordelia
To whom? Vordarian, at the Emperor's birthday
Who was obsessed? Vorrutyer, still smarting over the loss of Aral as his lover
Is it permitted for me to guess when someone had it partly right? If not, I'm afraid I spoiled it anyway.

SPetty, Sherlock and next quote are yours .
I believe it is, why not . Specially when answer is slightly correct .
What book? Brothers in Arms
Who said it? Miles
Under what circumstances? Miles had been given fast-penta and it had behaved weirdly with his medicines. Miles started to freely associate words said in his presence. The word "winter" made him act out Richard III. And that's what he said afterwards because at least he didn't reveal any vital information.

"The XX have surely made a mock of me. I would return the favor but they hold my heart and breath hostage to their whims. My children are prisoners of fortune. And fortune is gone mad, in YY."
The book?
Who said this?
To whom?
What is the favor?
Who or what is XX?
Who or what is YY?

I should have modifed the questions: the favor refers to the "make mock of" which was revealed in the longer quote. Sorry about that! So, I can accept your answer and give you a Sherlock. Your turn!
