What book? Shards of Honor
Who is speaking? Cordelia Naismith
Under what circumstances? Cordelia and her crew are in a lifeboat shuttle and the crew has agreed that if Cordelia wants to blow up the shuttle rather than surrender to the Barrayarans, they would be ok with it.

Has it been five? I hope so!

What book? Shards of Honor
Who is speaking? Cordelia
Under what circumstances? Her shipmates have offered to self-destruct their vessel if Cordelia wants, so that she won't have to suffer whatever tortures the vicious Barryarans have in mind for a female officer.

The quote is actually kind of ironic, considering what Cordelia does in Barryar.

While you are both correct, Blackwing was first, and therefore gets the Sherlock. You're up Blackwing!

Ragua, the purpose of the 5 day rule is to prevent quote game tennis (only goes back and forth between two people). As soon as someone guessed my quote a few back, you were welcome to play again. It's always nice to have more players in a game like this. :)

"The proper response to X isn't suicide, it's murder."
The book?
What or who is X?
Who is talking?
To whom?
Who else is there?

Oh and is Spirit Ring in the game?

Just guessing:

Curse of Chalion

Cazaril talking to Iselle with Betriz present
X is Dondo, or more precisely, being married to Dondo, or how to avoid the wedding.

So far we had agreed to keep to the Vorkosigan Saga and World of Chalion (all three books). But we could decide otherwise, if people agree. I have read "Spirit Ring" but whether I'll be able to recognize a quote...
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

I don't think we ever came to a final decision about Beguilement and Legacy, either.

FWIW, I'm all for including all three (Spirit Ring, Beguilement and Legacy), or any subset thereof.

"The proper response to X isn't suicide, it's murder."
Well, if it's not Dondo that needs to be murdered, then it must be Brucie-baby. So that would make the answers:

The book? Falling Free
What or who is X? Brucie-baby aka Mr Van Atta aka Bruce
Who is talking? Leo Graf
To whom? Has to be Claire - after they've taken the baby away
Who else is there? Silver would have been present as well since she's the one that trapped the suicidal Claire in the air lock and went after Leo

Not that there haven't been many other baddies that needed/deserved to be murdered... but I just don't remember that many characters being driven to contemplate suicide. And at that, Iselle wasn't considering suicide she was just praying for the gods to take her (or Dondo).

Of course!

Well, in Chalion's world, praying can be considered a form of suicide...

Hmmm... I spent a few days searching the passages I expected it to be in, and finally gave up and searched amazon.com. It's in the book I thought, but the participants in the conversation are other than I expected. I'm thinking I disqualified myself from answering. :(

I find it, at least. My books are in terrible state, just because this game, not because I'm reading again and again :-).

Barrayar
Cordelia
Koudelka
Tanery Base :-)

At first I thought abour Mirror Dance, Mark and Aral in hospital, but no. Then, Barrayar, Cordelia and Aral when Negri died. And finally :-).
Risi, very interesting quote :-).

Yes, you've got it RK!

I had wanted to just start it where "XXX glanced at ..." but I thought that was just too widely applicable with no real clue as to who and which enemies. So I left the beginning intact.

Now you're up!

"Accident? Maybe… Your "accidents", I once noticed, have ways of entangling your enemies that are the green envy of mature and careful strategists."
Book?
Who is "You" or "your"?
Who is "I"?
There were several persons present during that conversation. So, name two of them :-).

Vor Game (chapter 11)

Who could "You" be but Miles!

"I" is Tung.

Elena, Gregor and Arde are in the shuttle with them.

I'll wait for RK to confirm as etiquette demands, but I did not just guess, I did check.
And from now on the new rule that we voted for applies: all three published books of "TSK", even "Passage", plus "Spirit Ring" but not the short fiction in DD, nor nonfiction.

But this does not necessarily mean I'll quote any of them....
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

XXX's hands turned in their restraints, opened in pleading. "Help us. You must help us."

YYY stared at XXX's bonds, shaken. "I'm sorry..."

XXX?
YYY?
Will YYY help XXX and the others whom XXX calls "us"?

In the thread "should we extend.." I gave a hint about this quote
viewtopic.php?p=1847222#1847222

I also used the phrase "indifferent quote", to mean something that has little emotional content and will not easily be related to its origin. Well, not that easy to find some in LMB's books! I finally found one and offer it as a bonus.

Since it has no relation whatsoever with the main quote, brings a half-sherlock but not the right to ask the next quote, anyone can answer it without answering the main question, even RK before the 5 days usual delay.

BONUS
...to find XXX had not taken advantage of his opportunity. YYY should have aaaed only the small sofa, forcing the two into closer proximity than the separate, admittedly comfortable, chairs they had chosen. Staid old rule-following XXX seemed unconscious of his lady's secret yen for a little romantic idiocy. YYY was oddly reminded of ZZZ, forced by bbb...
Book?
XXX?
YYY?
ZZZ?
who is XXX's lady?

aaa is a verb; it would have been a hint so I hid it, you have to find it too.

What (not: who) is bbb that forces ZZZ to... do what?

Since not finding the bonus won't stop the game, I won't be giving further hints except this one: it is in either Vorkosiverse or Chalion's World, not in any of the newly added books, just as the main quote (but not necessarily in hte same book).

Book? Memory
XXX?Duv
YYY?Miles
ZZZ? Taura
who is XXX's lady? Laisa Toscane

aaa is a verb; it would have been a hint so I hid it, you have to find it too : uncovered

What (not: who) is bbb that forces ZZZ to... do what? size and work and rank, that keep her from being (well, the book says mocked) romantic.

I've looking in half the Vorkosigan books, and all the Chalion books for the main quote. *grumble* But this one, despite your assurances of ambiguity, turned out to be fairly easy to get. Guess my brain just works differently.

Well, it would indeed seem that our brains work differently! I was leafing through Memory for a passage that had not registered, and I found this. The only thing that clicked was "uncovered" because it reminded me of all the coverings on the furniture when Miles came back home (that was an emotional moment).

I think the main quote is reasonably difficult, but I really thought the bonus was much harder.

Anyway you get half a point, but not the next question which is for who guesses the main question, of course.

Not quite 5 days since I first posted this, but consistent with the logic of the 5-days rule, I think a hint should be given shortly before RK is allowed to vote.

This quote is not much longer, but there are two hints in the few added words that should make it much easier.
XXX's hands turned in their restraints, opened in pleading. "Help us. You must help us."

YYY stared at XXX's bonds, shaken. "I'm sorry..." God the Father, was he actually apologizing to XXX?

Book?
XXX?
YYY?
Will YYY help XXX and the others whom XXX calls "us"?

I'll have a go.

Book: Ethan of Athos
XXX: Terran C ?
YYY: Ethan

Will YYY help XXX and the others whom XXX calls "us"?

Yes, he helps with the ovaries/pyschic genetic material.

I cheated. I originally posted a different answer, reread it, then talked myself out of it. Sorry.

Well, this quote has been a lesson in leaving your assumptions at the door. I was sure the "us" was the good guys and therefore I was having the darnedest time finding it. I finally decided it HAD to be in EoA, by reason of having checked every other possible saga story I could think of and being really quite sure it wasn't a Chalion scene. But even when I started the scene where it takes place, I didn't think I'd found it... until I actually read it. :( So, the answers:

Book is Ethan of Athos
XXX is Millisor
YYY is Ethan

This takes place towards the end, when Millisor is restrained to the bed in quarantine (aka under arrest). The "us" is the Cetagandans... and no, Ethan does not help them, instead choosing to help Terrence Cee.

This has been one challenging quote!! Good job, Voralfred!!

(I just read the hint when I came to post the answer, so that wasn't any help!)

Yes!
XXX is indeed Millisor, just where you say it is.

So undoubtedly, the next quote is yours.
Fro mnow on all three published books of TSK are fair game as well as _Spirit Ring_. Just as you (alone) wished. Isn't it quite appropriate you'd be the first to do so? (Of course you could be sneaky and not use the new possibilities...)

As for the sherlock, should you get it all, or should it be split with Ragua, who got the book and YYY? You said you did not see the hints
("God the Father" indicating _EoA_, but "apologizing to XXX" was meant to indicate that the latter was no friend of YYY) so that means you did not see Ragua's post either.
Feedback on the attribution of the sherlock, from the other players, please?
