I don't know :?.
It was a difficult quote . It seems to me that Ragua deserves half point :?.

Yes, I think the Sherlock should be split between us. When I read Ragua's post and saw that he had almost all of it, I was reluctant to post... except that I've been days looking for this quote and it'd been driving me crazy!

Actually, I'd even be quite willing to let Ragua have the next quote.

But I still think it was a great quote -- it had enough clues within it to be found, but one really had to think and work. Great fun!!

As far as the next quote is concerned, there is no doubt it is for risi: Ragua got XXX and "us" wrong.

But sice risi does not mind, I'll split the sherlock half-and-half.

It was, indeed, a difficult quote to find. Unfortunately for me, my copy of Ethan of Athos has been MIA since I started playing this game. The broadening of the quote was definitely a give-away, but without the book, there's no way I could have answered the rest of the questions.

Still fun to look for it while the book title was unsure, of course. I love this game. :)

"XX XXX?" YYY snorted. "Wrong type of party for him, ZZZ. He only goes to the kind where the wine flows freely."
Book?
XX XXX (first and last name)?
YYY?
ZZZ?
Where does this statement take place and who else hears it?

Book? = A Civil Campaign
XX XXX (first and last name)? = Ivan Vorpatril
YYY? = Byerly Vorrutyer
ZZZ? = Alexei Vormoncreif

Where does this statement take place and who else hears it?

It takes place outside Ekaterin's house, and Miles is eavesdropping through an open window.

In the front of Vorthys' house, Miles and Ekaterin overheard it.

Well, you are both right! :D But Ragua was first--by 2 minutes--so he gets the Sherlock and the next quote.

I thought it might be too easy but we've got company and I didn't have time to search for a better one!

Yay! For once I typed fast enough! Okay, here goes:
"Dresses are weapons, my dear, in sufficiently skilled hands."
Who is speaking?
To whom is this comment addressed?
What is the source and context of the quote?

Oh, and I'm female, by the way. All this "he-ing" led me to the dress quotation.

Lady Vorpatril

Taura

In Winterfair Gifts, Lady Vorpatril is getting Taura clothes for "the wedding".

The new quote:
"I told them to use their initiative," X murmured vaguely, groping for inspiration in a throbbing fog.

Y snorted. "A safe order to give a Z. At least you're sure to be obeyed."

X, Y, Z and book.

"So I can wake in the morning both aaa-bbb and with a hangover?" Granted, he couldn't imagine getting to sleep under any other circumstances, apart from a blow to the head.
"Well, it worked for me, once. The hangover is a fair trade for being so immobilized one cannot do anything stupid for a little while"
Book?
First speaker?
Second speaker?
what does aaa-bbb stand for?
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

I thought you solved my quote already! That would have broken Ghost's record, 3 minutes instead of 5

No worries. I know it's hard to see my pulchritudinous femininity here on the Internets. :P

Book? Curse of Chalion
First speaker? Cazaril
Second speaker? Umegat
what does aaa-bbb stand for? demon-ridden
voralfred wrote:I thought you solved my quote already! That would have broken Ghost's record, 3 minutes instead of 5
I did recognize it immediately but I had to go find it in the book to be sure that it was demon-ridden and not god-infested... it could have been either. :)

Indeed! I should have put that as a bonus, so you could have broken the 5 minutes record with the main answer and come back with the bonus within the hour

Anyway, it is correct so the next quote is yours, but only one full sherlock since I did not offer a bonus.

"Why, XXX. That was clever," said YYY, sounding rather astonished. XXX's brow wrinkled. A little less astonishment would have been a little more complimentary.
Book?
XXX?
YYY?

Bonus (1/2 point): What was clever?

Am I allowed to guess again this soon? It would truly be a guess, since a good half of my Bujold collection has been lent out in the hopes of creating new aficionados.

Yes. Ghost answered your post, so as soon as Ghost's post was answered you were eligible to answer again, even if the round did go really fast. Have a go!

Okay, I could be totally off base here, but here's my guess.

Book = Mirror Dance
XXX = Mark
YYY = Cordelia

What was clever? = Mark fattening up to show he's different from Miles.

Again, I don't have my copy of the book, so I can't check to make sure. Hope I'm not making a total fool of myself.

Nope, that's not it. But it was a good guess!
