"Why, XXX. That was clever," said YYY, sounding rather astonished. XXX's brow wrinkled. A little less astonishment would have been a little more complimentary.
Book?
XXX?
YYY?

Bonus (1/2 point): What was clever?

Hint: this is NOT the Vorkosigan Saga

I'd almost figured that out, after reading Mirror Dance and Civil Campaign for most of the weekend. :slap:

Aaarrrgh! I'm tempted to start making semi-random guesses. I don't really know where the quote comes from, but I have a suspicion based on the personalities of certain characters.

Paladin of Souls, Ista and dy Lutez.

Ha! Found it. And to think I wasted all that time skimming Passage this morning. :) I'd skimmed most of Spirit Ring last night, but started with Passage this morning instead. Silly. I should have known that the dialect in Passage didn't allow for the "Why, XXX." Especially since I'd already read about three other "clever" passages and didn't come across anyone saying, "why" as an exclamation. :wall:

Book: The Spirit Ring
XXX: Thur
YYY: Fiametta

What was clever? That Thur used a hammer to break the sword of the guard in the cellar to disarm him.

Correct on both counts! A Sherlock and a half for you, and the next quote!

I swear if I tell four more people, I'll be altogether free.

Which book?
Who is thinking this?
What is the person telling?

Nope, although there is a rather similar passage there. :) Good guess.
The passage from Paladin of Souls (for those who are interested) reads:

She shrugged. "I have made this confession twice now. Perhaps some third occasion will release me."

I'd put it in a quote box, but I don't want to confuse people as to which one is worth the Sherlock.

I checked .
I knew it was Mark and Mirror Dance, but I wasn't sure when .
It was during the conversation Ellena and Mark, about Mark's impotence, torture, trying to seduce that clone. I don't that's enough :?.

That's great, Reede. The sherlock is yours and you're up for the next quote.

I ran across it looking for the last one, and remembered the quote from Ista (that Ghost mentioned), and thought it would be a good challenging one because of that. I hadn't really remembered Mark thinking it at the time.

It was unlikely to be Voralfred's guess because we're never "in" Guppy's thoughts in Diplomatic Immunity .

I hope it was at least a little fun. :)

"Were you trying to give me the fright of my life, boy?"
This is a somewhat educated guess (ie, I haven't looked it up to verify at all).

The book? Vor Game
Who is talking? Aral
To whom? Miles
What is the fright? The whole mess with the Cetagandan fleet at Hegen Hub
