A hint might be nice: I spent most of the evening till 1:30am last night alternately skimming/rereading Curse of Chalion (because I presumed the "not that series" was a not Vorkosigan hint). My personal guesses for the speaker so far have been:
Piotr (which I've ruled out, having skimmed Shards of Honor and Barrayar, plus the first couple chapters of Warrior's Apprentice)
Aral (thinking he doesn't talk about being frightened, though, after I've checked the obvious places. Much too much of a man of action to talk of being frightened by something.)
the Provincara in Curse of Chalion (if it's there, haven't found it yet)
one of the other characters, talking to some sort of page
I admit, every time I really have to look for something based on a mannerism, I'm again impressed by Lois Mcmaster Bujold's ability to do characterizations. When I was in elementary school, I wanted to be an actress, but I couldn't act out certain kinds of characters (specifically flighty women: the case in question was Mark Twain's Widow Douglass). I think for that reason, it would be particularly difficult for me to write fiction: my voice is fairly set at this point. While I tend to be more "me" online (in much the same way Miles is more "Miles" as Naismith), I'm still me everywhere, and I'd have tremendous difficulty voicing characters the way that Lois does. While several people in the series use certain words, the context varies, and in doing so, makes it their voice and not someone else.

Sure. It's not the Vorkosigan series.risi wrote:Did you mean it's not one of the Young Miles stories or not part of the Vorkosigan universe series?Blackwing wrote:No, it's not that series.
Could we perhaps have a hint?
Here's a longer quote:
The book?"Were you trying to give me the fright of my life, boy?" X demanded, plunking the glass back down almost hard enough to crack it.
"No," Y drawled, rescuing the glass and filling it again, "I suspect that was just a bonus. Sit down and catch your breath, B X".
"Don't you B X me till I'm done reaming you out," X said, but much more mildly.
Who is X? Two of those are pronouns.
Who is Y?
What was the fright?
B is attached to the name of X.
The Princess Bride.
Not just your basic, average, everyday, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum fairy tale.

Book? Beguilement (Sharing Knife)"Were you trying to give me the fright of my life, boy?" X demanded, plunking the glass back down almost hard enough to crack it.

X? Mari
Y? Dag
What was the fright? This, I'm guessing, is when Dag disappeared on patrol when he and Fawn killed the malice and he had to tend to her.
I don't have the book here to check (need to rectify that), but it sounds right.
Quote:
Tall Xxx, standing behind Yyy, pointed at the yyy and mouthed, This one!
What book? The Curse of Chalion
Who is Xxx? Palli
Who is Yyy? (yyy is a noun describing Yyy that would give it away too easily.) Bergon
Who is Xxx pointing Yyy out to? Iselle.
Oddly enough, I just reread this book this past weekend, so the quote was still fresh in my mind. I'm working on The Paladin of Souls at the moment.

Spetty, you can answer now, since it was JKCade who answered your quote, there is no time limit on the third quote, only on the second one.
I was about to change this quote, as I realsed it has already been asked and answered, but that was before you joined, so it is OK for you since you know it. Otherwise it would be a bit awkward.
