I think it's enough. Miles had just mentioned that they had some very dead people to account for, and Vorthys replied that dead people didn't necessarily require a weapon, and then followed that observation with the quote.

One of my favorites:
"You will never regret having done so. But you may deeply regret not having done so."

What book?
Who is speaking?
To whom are they speaking?

James,

This quote has actually been done before, but it was long before you joined the forum. I have refrained from answering it since I recognize it as a repeat (I answered it the first time), and it's possible that others are doing the same.

There may still be some other relative newcomers who may be able to answer it, or you may want to put up another quote... I'm not sure what the official policy is.

And, yes, it is a great quote!

Well shoot, all the good ones are taken! (why does it seem like prom night all over again?) :D

Ok, how about this one:
"Rats," breathed Xxx. "That was quick."
Book?
Who is Xxx?
What is it that Xxx thinks was quick?

This is a complete guess, as I don't have the book in question to verify
"Rats," breathed Xxx. "That was quick."
Book? Ethan of Athos
Who is Xxx? Elli Quinn
What is it that Quinn thinks was quick? Um, this is what makes guessing hard. I'm guessing someone (possibly either security or the Cetagandans) caught on to something she did too quickly, but it's been so long since I've read EoA, I can't even guess it well.

If all but the last is correct, I'm willing to share the Sherlock with someone who can actually locate their copy of EoA, since I can't even get it from the library (and since mine is lost, I'm hesitant to replace it, as, typically, I find the original copy soon afterward).

Incidentally, I'm claiming that I got a hint from either LMB Herself, or Miles. While I was looking for it elsewhere, I found a passage that had Miles thinking, "Rats, as Elli would say."

Correct! Elli said this when Rau showed up so fast at the trap that he and Millisor had set at the pharmecy to catch anyone who ordered tryamine.

Your sherlock, and I'll go post it now.

Congratulations!

Hey, I know this one, but I can't remember the time limit you have to wait after you win one to guess the next one, any help? Thanks!

Book? Dreamweaver's Dilemma, the story is Barter

Who is he? "Mr., uh, Klaatu is a Jehovah's Witness" is how Mary Alice introduces him to her husband Teddy, Sr. He is apparently an alien or an interdimensional traveller.

What is it? "Hooch!" is a jug of Clorox.

Who else is there? Mary Alice, the overworked mom/wife who finally gets to plan HER day!

Great story, wish it was a couple of hundred pages longer! :D

Actually, it's 5 days for the quote immediately after yours OR UNTIL the quote AFTER yours is answered, whichever comes first.

So:

Code: Select all

Dick posts a quote, Jane answers it.

Jane posts a quote. Dick can't answer Jane's quote until it's been 5 days. But Sally answers Jane's quote the next day.

Sally posts a quote. Jane can't answer Sally's quote for 5 days. Dick can answer even though it's only been 1 day, but he doesn't know the answer. Tom answers on day 3.

Tom posts a quote. Sally can't answer Tom's quote for 5 days. Jane can answer even though it's only been 3 days. But nobody answers for 5 days, so then Sally answers.

Sally posts a quote. Tom can't answer until ...
Do you see what I mean? The 5 day limit only applies to the quote posted by the person who answered your quote. Once it's gone beyond that quote, it's fair game even if it hasn't been 5 days. There have been some cases where the quote has turned over 3 times in the same day. If all 3 of those answerers had to wait 5 days, there'd be a noticeable stall. We have more players than we used to, but not enough to lock every answerer into a 5-day wait regardless of how fast the quote is turning over.

The so-called 5-day rule is just to keep 2 people from ping-ponging the game and keeping everyone else out. At least, this is my understanding... if I'm wrong will one of the mods correct me, please? Hmmm. Maybe it should be called the ping-pong rule and not the 5-day rule!

Meanwhile... James you are correct and you're up! :D

When the vote was last taken, it was my understanding that Dreamweaver's Dilemma wasn't being included in the game. (I'm not trying to cause trouble, as it was my vote to include everything. I'm just trying to clarify the rules, for myself, at least.)

As for the quote:
"...which brings me to my questions for you, Xxx."
Since my copy of Miles, Mystery and Mayhem is, alas, still missing, I'm going to guess without verifying.

Book? Cetaganda
Who is speaking? Dag Benin
Who is Xxx? Miles (well, probably literally "Lord Vorkosigan" or "Lieutenent")

It sounds like the conversation where Miles is trying to finesse Benin into looking into the Ba's death as a murder, rather than an elaborate suicide.

On the other hand, it could easily be from elsewhere. That's just the first guess that comes to mind. :)

Man, your good!

I had wondered about Dreamweaver's Dilemma myself, but since I knew the quote, wasn't gonna argue! 8)

I really need to get a copy of Dreamweaver's Dilemma. It sounds interesting. :)
"Yes..." How strange, that he should know exactly what I felt -- he says it better, though....
What book?
Who is "I"?
Who is "he"?

I think I just picked up a copy error though. That ought to be in italics, and it isn't, in my copy.

For what it's worth, my copy is formatted the same way, and it's dated 1986.

From that cryptic remark it would seem that James found it. He is presently restricted by the "no ping-ponging till 5 days" rule, but that leaves little time for the rest of us....
He gave a crucial hint, though.... There may be a technical reason for the absence of italics.
