"So, XXX," YYY purred at last. "And here we are after all. Satisfied now?"
Book?
Who's speaking (YYY)?
Who is he speaking to (XXX)?
bonus: Why should XXX be satisfied?

Mountains of Mourning
YYY= Miles
XXX= Grandfather (Piotr, who has been dead for years; but Miles is used to talking to dead people)

Miles eventually got into the Academy and graduated as an Ensign.
Piotr had died when Miles first failed the entrance exams. So now he can finally be satisfied.

"Airtight security, you said," murmured XXX, unsuccessfully suppressing a wheezing laugh. "The most expensive yet devised. Proof against the cleverest viruses, the most sophisticated eavesdropping equipment. And two ..."
Book?
XXX?
Who broke the security (2 characters)?
How?
And to get what classified information?

Bonus: in another book, the same two characters also obtain highly sensitive information, but in a very different way.
Book? What information? How do they obtain it?

"The Vor Game", XXX = Aral Vorkosigan (speaking to Illyan), security broken by Ivan Vorpatril and Miles Vorkosigan. When Miles wanted informations about Metzov's past, he asked Ivan to call the files for him and to place the two consoles (the secured one and the other one) face to face, so that he could read what was written on the screen.

I'm not sure about the other book, but I think you may be referring to "Cetaganda", when they talk to then-Captain Benin ?

Oh, yes, and hello, I'm new here, just as fan as everyone else.

Hello, Catherine, and welcome!

Good start for your first post, you win a sherlock!
Also, you are now supposed to post the next quote (the bonus is optional, you can add one, but you don't have to, and it does not determine the next quote).
You can look at the Sherlock thread to see how to give one to whoever answers your question.
viewtopic.php?t=202&start=775

Sorry for this bonus, this was not the answer I was waiting for, but you can try again, and so can anyone else (including marcyb, the bonus is not bound by the "5-days exclusion rule"), to get an extra half point.

Caroline, not Catherine, but never mind ^^

So... I'm not sure I've understood all this "Sherlock" business, but let's try a quote...
"That's rather fine," he murmured approvingly, staring in fascination at the XXX. "I wonder how they do that? I know where I could have one reverse-engineered. . . .
Which book ? What's XXX ? Who is "he", and who is he talking to ?

Bonus point : Where could he have it reverse-engineered, and by whom ?

Sorry about the error on your name
I sent you a Private Mail but you did not read it even though you posted after I sent it. (I know that because it is still in the "Outbox" and not in the "Sentbox" where it will go when you read it). If this is mysterious to you it is probably because you never went to check your "internal mail" here. Click on the link near the end of the first line, between "Profile" and "Log out" that should read :You have 1 new message: (or maybe more) but probably reads :You have no new messages: as mine does because of some bug. (I know when I get "internal" mail by an alert in my general, "external", mail which I check regularly).

Welcome!

Which book ? Komarr
What's XXX ? planet necklaces
Who is "he", and who is he talking to ?He is Miles, talking to Ekaterin on their shopping trip

Unfortunately, I'm not coming up with the bonus off the top of my head.

However, I think Voralfred's bonus is Brothers in Arms, when Ivan and Miles go through Galeni's personal files (which they're not supposed to), after Galeni disappears, looking to see if he's responsible for the missing Dendarii money. Miles, on his own, has too many unauthorized comconsole trips to choose from (from WA's comconsole search for Elena's mother, to his search of Ekaterin's comconsole in Komarr). :)

James, you should post this in a place where admins would see it more easily. Or PM an admin, Kvetch for instance, or Kiltannen, or both. And in the meantime, come and visit this site as often as you log in.

Suzette, you are right, this is the correct instance (where Ivan is also involved indeed), and the correct information they got, but before I grant you the 1/2 point bonus, you have to say how they got it.

Since I know that Suzette's answer is the correct one, the 5-days wait for me ceases to apply to Caroline's bonus.
I am not so sure, however, as to what the answer is. Since reverse-engeneering is not very ethical, I assume Miles does not mean Beta or Escobar, who would have the know-how, and I don' think Barrayar would have it. So I assume Mikes meant Jackson's Whole. But as for by whom, I cannot name a specific House that is more interested in such high tech than in biotech. So an unnamed, nonbiological, hightech House on Jackson's Whole, not too closely related to Bharaputra, is my best guess.

SPetty, you are right, this is indeed the occurrence. "XXX" is exactly "little Barrayar". 1 point for that one. (I'll try to do this "Sherlock" thing tonight).

A hint for the bonus : it's a named person. Later in "Komarr", there's a reference to "the last time Miles went fishing". Well, this and the "reverse-engineering" thing both refers to events in the same book.

"the last time Miles went fishing" is in Memory with Illyan.
But shorting the power pack of a stunner to turn it into a grenade is not such a technological advanced trick...
So whom do you mean? I don't see any high-tech wizard.
There is Weddell/Canaba, but if he is undoubtedly a genius, he is a biotech genius. However brilliant he is, I don't see him as a universal one able to pull this kind of trick in addition to the other ones. There is a world of difference between an apoptopic procaryote and a planet earring.
Miles physician's team did build a device, but the hard part was the biological connection to his brain. The purely electronic part, to sent the correct signal, is not so difficult. This does not prove their ability to reverse-engineer the model planet.

Well, +1/2 for Voralfred. I'm quite sure that when Miles talks about someone able to analyse something that tiny, he's referring to Weddell. Maybe he's wrong in thinking Weddell can pull the trick, but nanotech is nanotech... Anyway I believe that Lois meant for Miles to think about Weddell then.

Well, after Galeni disappeared, the Ambassador to Earth unlocked Galeni's office for Miles and Ivan, where Miles became "absorbed in breaking into the coded files." :) There was also the fun comparison between Galeni's finances and Ivan's that made the scene memorable. ;)

Ok, next quote:
"'Between justice and genocide there is, in the long run, no middle ground,'" Xxx intoned.
What book?
Who is Xxx?
Who is Xxx speaking to?
Who is Xxx quoting, and regarding what topic?

Well, you clearly have the correct passage. So you get the 1/2 bonus.
But the answer I was really waiting for was "They talk the ambassador into using his emergency access code", and that was Ivan's doing. Miles broke into a low-level security to get access to Galeni's finances, but it was Ivan's cunning "holier-than-thou" attitude that decided the ambassador to open the high-security file.

Contrarywise, I am not sure Miles had Weddell/Canaba in mind, but if not him, then probably some unnamed Jacksonian House. Unless someone else has a better idea, maybe I can accept the 1/2 point Caroline had awarded me ;)

Since SPetty's quote is a bit too far now, I just repost it:

"Are we in serious sh*t, sir?"

The book? Borders of Infinity
Who is talking? Ensign Murka
To whom? Admiral Naismith
What's the situation? Miles and Taura have just been rescued from Baron Ryoval's Biolagicals Facility by the Dendarii. Miles is speaking over the comm-link to Murka on the Ariel. Miles' instructions are to recall all the search teams and rejoin the Ariel immediately so the Dendarii can get Dr Cananba (along with Taura, Nicole the Quaddie, and themselves) out of Jackson's Whole territory quickly.

If I'd asked, I'd call that technically correct, but would prefer that you named the novella itself (provided that's where it is, and that's where I would have guessed it was). :)

The correct reply should have been;

"Are we in serious sh*t, sir?"

The book? Borders of Infinity, the "chapter" was Labyrinth
Who is talking? Ensign Murka
To whom? Admiral Naismith
