Another effective trick, XXX thought; it reminded him of that habit of YYY's, of dropping his voice to a whisper when speaking in a rage. It locked attention.

Book?
XXX?
YYY?
Who is using a trick similar to YYY's one, here? (not a name, just a job description)
... and just enough context for a third party to find the place easily.

I don't propose a new bonus this time.
But there are a lot of old, cold bonuses that can each bring a half point, if you would just backtrack a bit...

My Xmas present to participants to that game:

I backtracked the game (not quite all the way back, but to page 13, where I found one post of mine mentioning exactly two unclaimed bonuses, both of which have been solved by now; I assume that at that time I did backtrack all the way) to find all unclaimed bonuses that can still bring a half-sherlock each.

There are only three bonuses for grabs, two are by me:
viewtopic.php?p=1840978#1840978
see next post for the answer to the main question; the genus is Panthera; there are no more tigresses (I think) but there are (at least) three more instances, for two different female animals of the Panthera genus. I want two instances, whether of the same species or not.
viewtopic.php?p=1844605#1844605

and this one by Caroline

Of course, any unclaimed bonus I might have missed is still worth a half-sherlock, too.

Current quote:
Another effective trick, XXX thought; it reminded him of that habit of YYY's, of dropping his voice to a whisper when speaking in a rage. It locked attention.

Book?
XXX?
YYY?
Who is using a trick similar to YYY's one, here? (not a name, just a job description)

No new bonus related to this quote.

A longer one?
"You will (...)" the ZZZ instructed. He did not seem to raise his voice, but somehow it was pitched to carry to the ends of the lines. Another effective trick, XXX thought; it reminded him of that habit of YYY's, of dropping his voice to a whisper when speaking in a rage. It locked attention.

Book?
XXX?
YYY?
ZZZ? (not a name, just a job description)
... and just enough context for a third party to find the place easily.

I hid what ZZZ instructed, as it would really make ot too easy.

The very beginning of "The Warrior's Apprentice" ? Before Miles manages to break both his legs for a second of pride ?

When Miles and Kostolitz are instructed about the physical exams for entrance to the Academy, ZZZ being the instructor, XXX = Miles and YYY = Miles' father, Aral.

I was pretty sure of who XXX and YYY were, but couldn't place the full quote before.

Yes, this is the place.
In english, ZZZ is "the non-com", which should have been translated as "le sous-off", but the french text has "le gradé", so your proposition of "the instructor" is OK as a back-translation.

One sherlock and the next quote!

So?

No idea on why bleeding ulcers run in Miles family?
Or on characters comapred to female Panthera?

Ok, so next quote is :
"I," XXX stated firmly, "have decided to get very drunk."
Who is XXX ? Which book ? Why has XXX decided it ?

And I'll try a shot at one of the bonus :

Bleeding ulcers run in Miles' family because they give them to each other, as he explained in "Mountains of Mourning", after Lem Csurik's interrogation, when they're all waiting for Ma Mattulich, Harra's mother, to come and confess under fast-penta. He kills the time by telling something about how his grandfather Piotr couldn't accept him as a cripple. "Aren't family squabbles jolly fun ?" and so on, if I remember correctly.

Yes, that is exactly what I was expecting.
One extra half-point.

No candidated for the Panthera women?

And of course, except for Caroline, there is also her unclaimed bonus!

Ivan, Mirror Dance.

He says first that because he has never done it at the Emperor's birthday party. However, he has heard that Miles' cryo-chamber has been found empty so that could also be the reason.

A bit longer quote:

I'm going to go ahead and take a wild guess:

The book? The Sharing Knife, Legacy
Who is thinking this? Y is the hut, or cabin, or tent that the Lakewalkers live in, it is Fawn and Dag's.
About what? That it (the tent, or cabin) doesn't seem like much at first glance, but it is Fawn and Dags first home as husband and wife.
Who else is there? Dag.

Yes, except that there were a few more Lakewalkers there to help pitch up the tent.

Really? Wow. Ok, I"m going to take another wild guess, this time at today's winning Lottery Numbers!
"I doubt Xxx's father was married to his mother, either," Yyy observed brightly.
Book?
Who is Xxx?
Who is Yyy?
Why is Xxx's ancestory being discussed?

"I doubt Xxx's father was married to his mother, either," Yyy observed brightly.
Book? A Civil Campaign
Who is Xxx? Lord Midnight, who was confirmed heir of the Vortala District at least for some time
Spoiler: show
though he always voted "Neigh!"
Who is Yyy? Ivan
Why is Xxx's ancestory being discussed? In relation with the "Ghembretten" case, as a precedent on whether the Count's choice of heir prevails over heredity (even to the point of absurdity).

"Why would anybody want to go look at a thing like that? It just sounds ugly."
XXX sat back and rubbed his nose, then brightened. "Then you should charge 'em money."
Book?
Who speaks first?
Who is XXX?
What is the "thing like that"?

Extra question: (just for fun, not for even one half sherlock, so multiple answers are welcome, and you can propose one immediately, James.)

Can you find examples in literature where people do things that would a priori be unpleasant, precisely because they are charged to do it? (The case that comes to my mind does not involve money, but goods, like barter for the privilege of doing something unpleasant)

It's Clover, at the beginning of "Passage", TSK3 (finally read it, have you ? ). XXX is Whit.

Fawn's family is having lunch while Dag try to tell them about Lakewalkers, malices and blight. The "thing like that" is the patch of blight left by the Glassforge malice.

You are right, except that Idid not finish it yet! Since I had ordered it, I started to read the first chapters on the Harper-Colllins website, and in fact I just received the hardcopy today, so I can go on.

Anyway, one sherlock and the next quote.

No idea for the extra question.? (no sherlock anyway :P )

"People."
At first I was thinking it was one of the medtechs talking to Cordelia about the uterine replicators, but stumbled across the right spot on my way through Cordelia's Honor. It's the "corpse-sickle" discussion.

Which book ? Aftermaths (the last chapter of Shards of Honor)
Who is "he"? Pilot Officer Falco Ferrell
who is "she"? Medtech Tersa Boni
what is "what" ? Corpses pulled from space after a battle
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.

Yes, I also recognized it (ah, the 5-days rule  !).
It is IMHO one of the most emotional pages that LMB wrote, though she wrote many of them. There is a deep "humanist" streak through her books, (many of Cordelia's appearances, Miles at the end of _MoM_, Leo Graf, and many more) but that one is among the strongest ones, for me. It left me a very very deep impression, and I think it is about that time (i.e., at the end of the very first novel by her that I read) that I decided I had to read everything she ever wrote (which I am in the process of doing, being half-way through "Passage" and having ordered "Horizon" which I plan to devour as soon as I get it).
