No, sorry, good guess though! Seems this line can apply to LOTS of places LMB has written about!

What was it Bruce Willis' charecter said in the movie "The Fifth Element"? Oh, "Lady, I speak two languages: English and bad English!" :D

I figured it out last night, but I'm going to be away for a week in a few days, so I'm not sure I should answer it.

Ok, well, here's some more if anyone else would like to give it a shot. Oh, bring me back a T-Shirt, X-Large.
"Uh...uh..." In a moment of inspiration, Zzz turned around and began to back down, ...
"Where now?" Zzz panted, when they reached the bottom.
Xxx pointed with his chin. "Hide in that jumble of equipment over there, for now. We daren't get too far away from the Yyys."

Book?
Who is Xxx?
Who/what is/are "the Yyys"?
Who is Zzz?

I have no idea yet but... just from the logic of the quote, was it really Zzz who turned around in a moment of inspiration, or rather Xxx?

"I have no idea yet but... just from the logic of the quote, was it really Zzz who turned around in a moment of inspiration, or rather Xxx?"

Yep, I just double-checked it, and it is correct as typed. Here is a little more, and I'm betting someone will have it figured out very quickly!
"Uh...uh..." In a moment of inspiration, Zzz turned around and began to back down, her free lower palm slapping the metal treads with each hop. It was still uncomfortable, but at least possible. Xxx followed.

"Where now?" Zzz panted, when they reached the bottom.

Xxx pointed with his chin. "Hide in that jumble of equipment over there, for now. We daren't get too far away from the Yyys."

This time I got it! The "lower palm" gave it away..

Book: Falling Free
Zzz= Claire
Xxx= Tony
Yyys=shuttles

and indeed in this case, both partners are on the same footing (or, in the case of Quaddies, "lower-handing"), one choosing the direction to run, the other where to hide; I had expected a less symmetric situation.

Correct! Congratulations! I knew the whole, "her free lower palm slapping the metal treads with each hop" would give it away.

BTW, LMB will be in Dallas next month at FenCon VI, guess who has a ticket! Whoot!

How lucky you are! I did meet her once, in Spain, but she rarely crosses the Atlantic, alas.

Next quote:
"No, it's like a thought, only more compelling. It storms your will--burns like lust, only not so easy to satisfy. Not like a trance, because it drives you outwards, not inwards."
Book?
Who says this?
To whom?

BONUS:
You have to find a book, not by LMB, which is associated to this exchange (not just the quote, a few lines of dialogue before and after), and its author, to get an extra 1/2 point

Is it so hard?
A hint: the bonus question is a hint by itself (I meant it to be a hint, from the start, and now I am just driving it home)

Recognized the quote instantly, but just got home.
"No, it's like a thought, only more compelling. It storms your will--burns like lust, only not so easy to satisfy. Not like a trance, because it drives you outwards, not inwards."
Book? Borders of Infinity
Who says this? Miles, about visions
To whom? Suegar

BONUS: Up for grabs (I have no idea)

Correct! One sherlock and your turn.

If one is a purist, though:
"Borders of Infinity" is the title of a collection, composed of three novellas.
The title of one of these novellas (indeed, the one from which the quote was taken, the only one that involves Suegar or visions) is "The Borders of Infinity".
It is usual for a collection to bear the name of one of the stories, but why there is this small discrepancy is not obvious to me.

Bonus up for grabs, folks!
These few lines of dialog between Miles and Suegar have somethign to do with some book, not by LMB. What book, by whom? Really, the main purpose of the bonus was to give you a hint towards "The Borders of Infinity".

Ok, next quote:
We see the world not as it is, but as we are.

I guess an expansion is in order:
We see the world not as it is, but as we are."That's not exactly what I'm about, here. Now, I can say, whatever's going on over there between you and your family, it will pass. Great griefs must, if only because no one has the stamina to keep them up that long."
Book?
Who is speaking?
To whom?

Dag to Remo who came to Berry's boat thinking Dag would understand him and take him in, because he broke the rules too. Dag lectures him and advises him to go back to his family, despite their current resentment regarding the broken sharing knife.

A completely blind shot in the dark, just to show I'm happy to see you back:

Elena (Bothari) to Miles in WA?
I specify Elena Bothari, to distinguish from her mother Elena Visconti.

but .."remembered"... is not exactly what should come that early in the Saga. Well, this is my proposal anyway. :spin:

"You've always wanted to be remembered."
Book: Spirit Ring
Speaker: Fiametta, to her father, Prospero, when her father laments that his breaking of Ferrante's spirit ring would likely make it difficult for them to lay low, as Ferrante would definitely remember him.

I just read the book a week or two ago, and one of the big underlying themes is being remembered, so when I saw this was the quote, Spirit Ring immediately sprang to mind. I did have to check to see whether the quote was at the beginning or at the end. Naturally, I checked the end first, and it was at the beginning. ;)
