Please tell me it's not in the "gluing" pages of Borders of Infinity (the "who" would be Miles, and the "this" being Simon's interrogation). Because I can't find my copy. This definitely happens to me too often...

It's not in the glueing pages of "Border of Infinity" ^^ Nor indeed in any of the short stories thus collected.

Ah ha!! I found it!
I'm not ready for this, not yet, not so soon. What was right ?
Book? The Vor Game
Who? Miles
What is "this"? The decision not to obey an illegal order (regarding Metzov trying to force the techs to go into the fetaine dump, and Miles being ordered to leave or take up a nerve disruptor against the "mutineers")

Hmm... ran across some good possibilities while I was looking for the last one. How about this one?
Ye gods, what a riot that fabulous rumor could start.

Well, it is NOT the rumor that some Auditor found a way to solve the widow's shortage in the Imperium, in _CC_. Not in the first chapter, anyway. Not either, when By comes to Ivan early one morning. Not that exact wording.
Still some other place in _CC_, maybe?

Not either the rumor that some obscure Merc fleet in the Hegen Hub was the private army of some Vor lordling. Illyan does mention something like this in _Vor Game_, but the wording is not the same there. Not that I expected Illyan to speak that way, but Miles commenting on something Illyan said.

Same rumor, same book, different speaker? (after all, you did not ask the speaker - or possibly thinker)

I didn't ask a speaker because it is not spoken. I didn't ask a thinker because it's not in italics (though I think it easily could have been).

It's not in The Vor Game, in part because I don't like picking the same book as the previous quoter (though now that I've said that, I'll have to do it at least once, just to stir things up). ;)

Ok, how about: Miles does not appear personally in this book. That narrows it down to about three books, right?

Well, technically, down to four. The Spirit Ring is among the allowed books, contrary to _DD_.
But assuming that by excluding the Chalion books and TSK you mean the Vorkosigan Saga, we are down to three, _FF_, _SoH_ and _EoA_, again assuming that the short appearance of Miles at the end of Barrayar counts (plus, the rather prominent role of the replicator), but Elli mentioning Admiral Vorkosigan in _EoA_ does not.

I'm taking a (blind) shot:
_FF_, some semi-nice character (Dr Yei?) wondering what would happen if the Quaddies heard about the fate Brucie-baby was preparing for them? Can't be Leo, he blew the whistle.

Nope, not Falling Free. (And I'd forgotten about Spirit Ring, so it would be 4, not 3, but would once again be 3, as you've eliminated Falling Free). :)

Well, since you forgot about Spirit Ring, it is not very likely your quote is from it, is it? So we are really down to two, I guess....

Rumor, rumor....

A rumor in _SoH_ or _EoA_

FOUND IT! Of course, after all the detective work that voralfred has done, not sure I can actually claim a "find".

Ethan of Athos, the conversation between Ethan and Brother Haas, discussing the failure of Brother Haas', uhm, sample, to actually progress into a viable fetus due to the age of the CJB culture. Oh, the rumor is that ALL the cultures may have been poisoned or "Some damned Outlander vandalism-" was to blame.

And in my rush to beat anyone else to the answer, I've only committed six spelling errors, "most" of which I've corrected!

Are the questions getting tougher or am I just getting old?
"...I have no wish to descend again for adventure's sake."
Book?
Speaker?
Who are they speaking to?

James

P.S. Last month I went to FenCon in Dallas, a very small fiction convention. The guest of honor was LMB! I got in line to get an autograph and noticed a guy walking up and down the line, saying "No more than three books to a person please, no more than three books to a person." Apparently, no one at this convention could count! Oh, and guess who didn't think to bring a book? I thought, "So what would Miles do?". I looked around, spotted some advertising paper about the cabaret that night sitting on a table next to a pitcher of ice water. I grabbed one, folded it in half and presented it to Lois when I finally got to her table. She opened it up to see what was inside andwhen she saw the advertisement looked up at me. I panicked and blurted "ForgotmybookinOklahomaCity". Bless her, she smiled and signed it, now it's framed on my wall!

_Brother iin arms_
Ivan, about the London tide dam, speaking to Miles and Mark?
Not sure of your question: only one person is talking, isn't it?
So: "Whom(plural) is he speaking to?" or I am missing something

Sorry, not correct.
My apologies for the confusion over "they". Only one person is speaking, and only one is listening. I used "they" instead of "he" or "her" to make it a little more difficult.

Okay, a little more:
"...I've been to the bottom of the pit, thank you. I have no wish to descend again for adventure's sake." His tone mocked the very word.

The quote expansion puts a different spin on it. It sounds like a memorable quote, but I'm not remembering it.

I have a list of suspects for the quote. I tend to wait the 5 days before I start looking when I did the last quote, just to be sure I'm giving everyone else a sporting chance at it.

Alright, next one :
"[...]There's not too much I haven't seen before."
Book, speaker ?

Bonus : find a mention of someone with the same name as "speaker", but not in the same serie ^^.[/quote]
