Well, Suzette, that was a good choice of quote! It had us all racking our brains..
I think your first suggestion is the right one, 1/2 sherlock for each, and Caroline has the next quote. That's what I would have done if someone else had used your first answer on my "Dag imagining Dar's reaction" question to complete the answer.

I'll be away for a time, as I posted in the "Sign in, sign out" thread. Keep having fun without me!

I certainly have no issue with the 1/2 and 1/2 solution.

Sorry for the wait, what with Christmas and all ^^... Of course no problem with the half sherlock solution.

So, next is one of your charming sometimes-hard-to-translate expressions :
"[...] It's only a gut-feeling, but it's a strong gut-feeling." Like a bad case of indigestion.

I have absolutely no gut-feeling about this one.
A little help, maybe (longer quote or hints)? :help:

Ok, there're two : 1) It's in a Vorkosiverse book 2) first half of the book.

Happy New Year :)

OK, I'll jump.

You did not say exactly what you want, so I'll guess both what is needed and the answers.
Speaker is most probably Miles himself.
Blind guess: in Komarr, talking to Uncle Auditor Vorthys  about the fact that the soletta incident might be more sinister that sheer bad luck.
Incidentally, you are the one who deserves indigestion, for eating too much chocolate, on the one hand, and giving me a worse headache that the champagne hangover, on the other one :P

Wrong about Komarr, and you're right, I should have been more precise : book, speaker, and most importantly circumstances ?

Ok, now I'm remembering this. First speaker is Miles, second is...ah crap. It's either Quinn or Elena Bothari. XXX is Mark, and the book is Mirror Dance.

I found it right away, but wanted to wait for someone else to answer, 'cause I don't have any good idea for a new quote... but it's been quite some time, now, so :
"I've sworn off falling in love with galactic women and then trying to persuade them to immigrate to Barrayar. I've concluded my only hope is to find a woman who can already stand Barrayar, and persuade her to like me."
"And does Madame Vorsoisson like Barrayar?"
"About as well as I do." He smiled grimly.
"And, ah . . . the second part?"
"We'll see, Pym." Or not, as the case may be. At least the spectacle of a man of thirty-plus, going courting seriously for the first time in his life—the first time in the Barrayaran style, anyway—promised to provide hours of entertainment for his interested staff.
The full passage is as the beginning of the first chapter of "A Civil Campaign", exchange between Miles and his then-driver Pym on their way to the Vorthyses.

Of course it is! I can't believe I didn't catch that one, as close as it is to the last quote I picked.

Good job Caroline!

Correct! Congratulations! I was worried about giving any more hints, since as you said the quote is so close to the previous one. Your up!
