Glad you two were having fun while I was busy! :)

Anyway, next quote:
"Do you still want to bash my head in with a rock?"
What book?
Who is speaking?
To whom?
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.

Book? Cyrano de Bergerac
Speaker? Roxane
Who are they speaking to? De Guiche
Page number? (hee hee hee)

James
De Guiche has just asked Roxane if she has still anger towards him, and her answer is related to the fact that she is now in a convent.

Oh, you mean, in LMB's books..

"Damn you," croaked Yyy, half-paralyzed. "Haven't you ever been out-manuvered?"
"If I had I wouldn't be here," shrugged Xxx.

Page number? (hee hee hee)

I changed the questions up a little since now there are two speakers.

If I may?
"Shards of Honor", part 1 in "Cordelia's Honor" (ISBN: 0-671-87749-6).
I suspect the page number will depend on the edition, but in my book it's on page 48.

Korabik Gottyan is ambushed by Aral Vorkosigan at the OK Corral on Sergyar.
"Damn you," croaked Gottyan, half-paralyzed. "Haven't you ever been out-maneuvered?"
"If I had I wouldn't be here," shrugged Vorkosigan.
The e lacking in your "out-manuvered" was a dead give-away. :D

Correct! In my book, "Shards of Honor", the page number was 71, but as you say the page number will depend on the edition. The paperback I have was published in 1986 and I have literally read it to shreds!

Ok, I'm pretty sure there's more than one instance of this particular quote.

On a side note, I still love the part (in Brothers in Arms?) where Miles changes the swear word he uses based on which "Miles" he's supposed to be.

Perhaps there are four quaddies & Roic, aren't they? In that case the right answer is "It was Lord Auditor Miles Vorkosigan, on board of Idris, when his plastic gloves came apart".
"Vorkosigans gave themselves airs - ever theirs cockroaches wear a House crest".

Yes, you're quite right with your conclusion.

Though I was thinking of a different set of 6 people subjected to the same adversity:
Russo Gupta and his 3 shipmates, and also Bel and Miles all got infected with the same deadly disease. Gupta's shipmates died, Gupta neutralised his infection with his peculiar cold-blooded physiology, Miles and Bel were cured by Cetagandan specialists.

Your turn again.

P.S.
1. Miles has been skeletally crippled until he had all his long bones replaced by ceramics, and now, at 31 or so, he has a weakened cardio-vascular system. When he reaches 50, if he reaches 50, will he somehow have acquired more damage and be crippled again?
2. Are you and I having a Russo-Belgian competition here?
3. Should I learn Russian and you learn Dutch?

It's especially remarkable since we talk about English books and look for quotes in English texts.
I just believe that we wouldn't need any auto-translator device. :)

Anyway, this is my next quote:
"... they may also serve who only stand and wait, but life is short enough already."
Who tells this?
To whom?
Name a book and a scene please.
I'm going to give an extra half-point to anybody who identify the original source of this quote. (The character him(her)self cites some classical text here...)
"Vorkosigans gave themselves airs - ever theirs cockroaches wear a House crest".

:?
Give us a hint please.

For the bonus point: was it Winston Churchill (talking about the British Home Guard)?

Okay, does anyone have a copy of the "Rules of the LMBQG" handy? How do we handle this?
I vote we give E Pericoloso Sporgersi the chance to ask a new question.

The bonus I recognized immediately: in fact, this book is one of those of which I corrected the French translation. At that time I looked the quote up: "On his blindness", by John Milton.
Then I had the problem of remembering what book that was out of: it had to be Cetaganda, Memory, Komarr, or "MoM".
So scratching my head over and over I finally remembered: at the end of Memory when Miles and Elli have their last emotional meeting

The LMBQG rules says that Jetta should have given a hint earlier, really. I was away from the web for a while. I am just back, but the hint should really have been posted earlier. But if for some reason Jetta does not reappear now that I answered, some other player should confirm my win before I post the next quote (and grant me my 1 1/2 sherlock)
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

I can confirm the qoute now that you've pointed it out: Memory, Page 457 in my edition, middle of the page.

I don't know anything about the bonus tho.

Happy to confirm your bonus answer, Voralfred, and score up your 1.5 points.

I was sure that the original text did not contain the word may. So I googled for "They also serve who only stand and wait", which gave
http://www.englishclub.com/ref/esl/Sayi ... it_911.htm
and also

Oh, yes, "may" is not in the original quote by Milton. Miles just made a sentence of his own use by altering it. But when I had to correct the translation, I realised that Miles' words were not just his own, and I tried to find the original quote to help me find the best translation.
I find it strang that in your second link, the one on the wartime use of the sentence, there was absolutely no reference to the original verse by Milton! Of course they used it because they remembered hearing it in school, but noone remembered exactly where it came from?

New quote
Maybe we ought to send him to the salt mines for two weeks every year, to keep him happy and content with his regular job.
Book?
Who thinks this thought?
Who is "him" and what is his "regular job"?
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

I can't check my intuitive answer because I don't have the book at hand right now (it's still packed somewhere I don't remember, dammit).

But I think it is

Book? Ethan of Athos.
(Athos reminds me of The Three Musketeers)

Who thinks this thought? Ethan Urquehart.

Who is "him" and what is his "regular job"? Janos, the janitor.
(reminds me of Janus, one of Saturn's satellites)

Wrong on every count!
Sorry :deviate:

Janos the janitor? As I remember it, Janos was unable to keep a job with such a high responsibility as a janitor!

Book ? The Vor Game
Who thinks it ? Miles Vorkosigan
Who is "him" ? Gregor Vorbarra, whose regular job is being an Emperor.

Seems working as a near slave on Aslund Station made him downright cheerful (for Gregor).
