I had no idea for a quote, even after two days of fruitless pondering. :( So I picked a book at random (don't worry, I didn't use a dart, just a blindfold and my gentle fingers), opened it at random and started reading. Even though I immediately got immersed in the story, I didn't forget my purpose. I very soon found a worthwhile quote on the very page I started reading, so here goes:
"... She/he [ZZZ] is going to demand to know what the hell was so important. And," his/her [XXX] voice wavered in a sigh, "I'm going to have to tell her/him [ZZZ]. ..."
Who are
XXX, the person speaking?
YYY, the person spoken to?
ZZZ, the person referred to?

Question for 1/2 bonus point: where (astrographical location) does this conversation take place?

P.S. I wonder. What was the total population of Barrayar about the time when Miles had to investigate the Silvy Vale murder? 150 million or so? Much more? Less? :?

Edit: Corrected the bonus award.

Do you have its equivalent in Flemish? Liar as a mathematical physicist? or something like that?[/size]
more like a weather forecaster!

You know, I've had a French woman as a patient (Mol, Belgium, with its nuclear research facility and its European School, is quite cosmopolitan). I distinctly remember telling her one day that, if I had to do something painful, "Je le ferai gentillement avec un avertissement préalable" (I would do it gently and with advance warning).

I actually can't think of a Flemish expression equivalent to the French one you quote. Which goes to show you that, Astérix notwithstanding, the "Belgae" are the most courageous of all Gauls.
Also confirmed by Gaius Julius Caesar in his "De Bello Gallico": "Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae, ..."

You told her that. The question is, did you hold your word?

Old Julius wrote so. The question is, who believes the bastard?

EPS asked the above. The question remains, what are the answers. I, for one, have no idea. :(

Oh yes, I did keep my word. As it happened, I accidentally did hurt her, but not badly nor intentionally. And she very graciously forgave me too. 8)
(I remember her so clearly because I had to explain all procedures in French, and besides, she was cute. :butter: )

All red-blooded Belgians proudly do ... :P . In Tongeren we have a statue to honour Ambiorix (looks remarkably like Astérix on steroids), one of the chieftains to ultimately have been defeated by Caesar's legions.

Off the top of my head, this is from Mirror Dance when Elli has to tell Simon Illyan about Miles and the needle grenade. The speaker is Simon Illyan, and I'm thinking ZZZ is Cordelia. (Simon's speaking to Elli, and possibly Elena, too. I can't remember if they were both present). However, I'm not currently able to find my copy of Mirror Dance, so it could be something completely different. :)
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.

Ha! Found my copy, and it's Elli talking to MARK about telling Simon about Miles's needle disruptor accident.

Also, now that I have the book, it's on the Peregrine, in Komarr orbit

In Hallowed Hunt
Ingrey is speaking to Learned Hallana, when they first meet in an inn in Red Dike.
By "safe" he does not mean that he is not in danger, but that he is not a danger for others (and indeed, it was a good idea to tie him up before trying... whatever she tried!)

Correct, of course! I realized after I posted it that you'd been re-reading Hallowed Hunt, but by then, it had been up a few hours, and I didn't think it would be fair to change it. I even saw the post where you were reading only a few pages off the quote I picked. :D

Anyway, you're up!

Well, yes, I was just rereading it so maybe it was not quite fair, but I did say it... It is just a bit of luck, anyone might be rereading a book just when one feels lke quoting it. ANyway, next quote:
"I should have known better than to think you dead until I'd seen you buried with a stake through you heart," said XXX, sadly ironic.
Book?
Who is XXX?
Talking to whom?

Book? Shards of Honor
Who is XXX? Korabid Gottyan
Talking to whom? Aral Vorkosigan

This conversation takes place after Aral and Cordelia have walked from Cordelia's original base camp to the secret cache Aral knew about. He has found Gottyan on the path and is now trying to find out who is on (Aral's) side in this little mutiny that is going on.

Dammit!
There are a lot of books I want/need to read/reread. But you guys always slyly manage to impose on me an irresistable urge to reread the LMB book of the latest quote.
Twice dammit!
I don't get to read anything else anymore and, on top of that, I always reread the wrong book for the next quote ...

Ok, that one is itching at the back of my brain, but I think it's because it's similar to a quote in a book by a completely different author that I just finished reading last week (and returned to the library, so all I really remember was that second chances were mentioned frequently). I have some ideas for this one in LMB's work as well, but I think I'm sitting out answering quotes until after the party next weekend for my son's graduation from high school.

If it's still up a week from Monday, I'll start checking out the places that spring to mind. :) Good luck to everyone else, though!

Sounds like a very "Markian" thought.
I looked throughout "Brothers in Arms" without finding it.
"Mirror Dance"?

You did not ask precise questions.
I assume, book and speaker (or thinker, rather, this does not sound that it is something uttered, but I could be wrong)

Indeed, sorry for my forgetting the questions : thinker, book, and what would be the "first chance" which got wasted ?

It's not Mark, by the way.

I'm thinking of Winterfair Gifts where Roic thinks this thought after botching his first attempt to woo Taura. Now Roic doesn't lack courage, on the contrary, how else could he be bodyguard to Miles and Ekaterin (in DI).
I was glad he finally did win Taura, even though for only a short romance. And Pym was quite chivalrous about it too.
