I nominate *anybody*, and if she can't then *somebody*.

Or, I'll just as well kick it off:
When Shanghai is lost, a boy finds that he has an extremely strong will to survive despite all the nastiness, evil and human degradation he has to witness.

is it Empire of the Sun by J. G. Ballard? I haven't read it, but I've seen the movie.
Re: GAME -- One line "blurbs" (for Sherlocks)
It is. Sherlock for you!
By the way, didn't that movie win several Academy awards, or am I mistaken?

The IRA kills his wife and kids; he goes a bit crazy and tries to get revenge by putting his background as a molecular biologist to use; now it's dangerous to be a woman.

New blurb:
Postwar British society has completely flipped over; not only are military officers lost among common men, but servants have begun to supersede their masters.
Re: GAME -- One line "blurbs" (for Sherlocks)
HINT: This little known novel of the 1940s was turned into a popular movie in the 1960s.

For Zybahn's blurb I have no idea, but I am not aware of any chess game in Wizard of Oz. Try again (even better known, I would say)E Pericoloso Sporgersi wrote:The Wizzard of Oz? (Judy Garland and/or Diana Ross)voralfred wrote:A little girl plays a completely demented chess game.

In the 60’s, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

Closer, but not quite.
In Wonderland, Alice meets cards, not chess pieces...
Edit :
Neither I nor MidasKnight realized that EPS had proposed the same answer first. But anyway, it is still not the right one !
Maybe I should make it clear that I am referring to a book, not a movie adaptation

The answer proposed twice is incorrect, but very close to the correct one. And my insistence on a book, not a movie is in fact a very strong hint. Not that there is any reference to chess in the movie either, but if you think in terms of a movie first, then in terms of books... I am giving you the anwer on a platter...

Through the Looking-Glass
Re: GAME -- One line "blurbs" (for Sherlocks)
Exactly!clong wrote:Through the Looking-Glass
One and a new blurb for you.
I was thinking that mentioning the movies adaptations which though called "Alice in Wonderland" often include episodes from "Through the Looking-Glass" (in the Disney one, we have the singing flowers, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, who also tell the story of the Walrus and the Carpenter) would be a strong hint to the existence of the latter book, which, as a book, is a separate entity from "Alice in Wonderland"!
Though none of the chess characters appear in the movies, that I know of. The Queen and the King are cards (heart suit), not the chess Red Queen and King of the Looking Glass.
Edit:
In fact I was pessimistic; except for the 1951 Disney movie, at least some chess pieces from "Through the Looking-Glass" actually do appear in most other movie adaptations, though the name is still Alice in Wonderland. So there !

Re: GAME -- One line "blurbs" (for Sherlocks)
I will post a new blurb...but first it seems like i need to take the time to review all the old blurbs so as to avoid a duplicate.

A newly employed burglar meets interesting people, survives peril and adventure, and ultimately ends up with more than just his share of the loot.
