Re: LMB Quote Game
Exactly!
Your turn!
Your argument "the more the merrier" is why I had considered forbidding "three-persons-frisbee" if it were to become a problem, but lately, it has not been. Though the number of active players is rather small, this is due to the disappearance of some old friends, risi for instance. But not because a barrage of fast answers has barred less rapid would-be players to find a chance to answer.

If anything, I know I try to pick more difficult quotes to find, because I think it makes the game more interesting.
I do miss seeing risi, though.

Re: LMB Quote Game
There was a time I tried to pick difficult ones, or ones without a name to strike out, or meaningful ones, but lately I found that just opening a random book at a random page can also give funny and hard-to-find quotes, so I pick faster (which is good, 'cause I haven't as much time lately as when I began the game - I went from study to work, so I'm sure you all understand). So, next one :
Bonus : What's "Something" ?
Which book, who is "you", who are "they", who's speaking ?" [...], you may be sure it means they still want something from you. Something they haven't got yet."
Bonus : What's "Something" ?
Re: LMB Quote Game
I thought had it there, but no. Same concept, but different wording. Interesting quote!
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.

I suppose each quizzee may ask a question (1 per post), is then under an obligation to wait for an answer to her/his/its query before posting a next question, and the quizzor is bound to respond to each question, though that response may be cryptic.Caroline Tredez wrote:A leetle more :"If they still lash and drive you, you may be sure it means they still want something from you. If I assume wrongly, then please correct me.
If I'm right then I'll lead off.
Question: May we disregard all books about the Nexus?

Yes, we can ^^.
Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, it is now obvious to me what world this is in (not TSK either).
But I'm leaving to Japan for one month. I'll have access to my mail, but not as regularly, so even if I could pinpoint what book, exactly, and more details, I wouldn't want to answer lest I stall the game: I won't have my books for a new quote! Of course, I coukd quote from memory... but not until the second fortnight, the first one my acccess would really be too irregular.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Does it have to be a literal quote?voralfred wrote:... I wouldn't want to answer lest I stall the game: I won't have my books for a new quote! ...
Why not a question about a situation or event, like in my very first participation with my question about a technical aspect of the Madame Minchenko Auditorium on Graff Station?
As a few examples, hors concours:
"The Vorkosigan groundcar had a little fender bender. What was the occasion, what was the damage and who was driving?"
or
"Ma Kosti had a stroke of genius. What was it, where was it first publicly applied and what was her reward?"
or
"Does the lake at Vorkosigan Surleau have any fish? How was it proven either way? Who witnessed it?"
So, Voralfred, if you have the solution to the current question, please go ahead.
And while you're at it, answer the example questions above.
Re: LMB Quote Game
There is also the qustio nof my access being irregular. That would also stall the game.
I would guess that those who "lash and drive" are the gods in Chalion's world. But that still leaves 3 books to look in, and I don't have them with me.
Since your questions are "hors concours"
- the driver was Ma Kosti's younger (youngest?) son, not the one who was already guard ar V-house at the beginning of Memory. That happens in _CC_ I believe, he was driving Miels but I don't remember where (to the Imperial Palace? to Uncle Vorhortis place to see Ekaterin?) and I don't remember the exact extent of the damage
- Ma Kosti had many many strokes of genius for using bugbutter. Which one are you referring to? One was scrumptious ice-cream at the famous dinner party
One other was the Maple Mead Ambrosy at Gregor a,d Lisa's wedding. What she got for that were shares in the ButterBug company (I.O.U.'s, Kou would call them)
- oh ,yes, lots of fish. They wouldn't bite a bait but just bomb them (hand grenades are even better than dynamite) and yo uget them floating belly up, as Miles demonstrated to Illyan.

Re: LMB Quote Game
1. You have it partially right. In Memory Martin drives Miles to the Imperial Residence. While navigating inside, the groundcar hits and bends the wrought-iron portico. The car itself is undamaged. Miles tells Martin to make a few laps around the neighbourhood to practice handling the car. When Miles departs after seeing Gregor, the portico is already fixed by Impsec minions.voralfred wrote:Since your questions are "hors concours"

2. No, there was no particular reward for Ma Kosti after the embarrassing dinner. And yes, I meant the Ambrosia at Gregor's wedding party. Proles normally not being invited to an Emperor's wedding, Ma Kosti considered her attendance to be her highly prized reward.
3. Miles used a short-circuited stunner's power pack. Besides Miles and Illyan there was a third witness, the Impsec guard on the shore, who was alarmed at the muffled sound of the explosion.
I think questions in the format I proposed are more interesting. But that's my personal opinion, of course.
And then - plain curiosity - were you using a japanese keyboard?
Either that or you just attended a cocktail party with too many distracting geishas.
"the qustio nof my access being irregular" indeed ...
Re: LMB Quote Game
Actually, Kareen mentioned that they paid Ma Kosti in shares, when they were asking Ekaterin to design the new butterbugs.
As to the original quote, I'm pretty sure I know where it is (though I remember the quote slightly differently, so it's possible it's located in a slightly different place).
The alternative quote I looked at was Miles and Duv Galeni in the cell in Brothers in Arms (there are several discussions about Galen thinking he has a reason to keep Galeni and Miles alive).

Yes, but that's just a payment, in the form of shares, no different from Kareen's and Martya's wages and Ekaterin's consultant's fee.SPetty wrote:Actually, Kareen mentioned that they paid Ma Kosti in shares, when they were asking Ekaterin to design the new butterbugs.
Ma Kosti considers her attendance at the wedding to be her personal honorary reward, like a medal which is not money but a token of honour.
So give! Your cease-fire is long past.SPetty wrote:As to the original quote, I'm pretty sure I know where it is (though I remember the quote slightly differently, so it's possible it's located in a slightly different place).

Re: LMB Quote Game
Sidetracked, I'm afraid. I finished Cryoburn last Monday (The last line! How could she dangle that red herring, then hit us with that last line??)
I haven't had time to check my resources for the quote.
At a guess, it's in Curse of Chalion, "they" referring to the Gods, with one of the saints speaking, possibly Umegat, or Clara, to Cazeril.
There's another quote by Cazeril about saints being valued by the Gods as they value a mule as They whip them over the passes.
I confess to being a big boggled that "They" isn't capitalized in the quote. I didn't want to guess, as once you know who "they" are, the quote is more obvious.

Yeah, I'm afraid I said a few (well, quite a lot, actually) bad words myself at that last line!
A good read tho.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Indeed, it was good. If only she'd left off the last line. Or left out the red herring. Without the red herring, the last line wouldn't have been quite so bad.
Anyway, having skimmed all of the conversations between Cazeril and another saint in CoC, I'm thinking it's sardonic enough to be Ista in Paladin of Souls, possibly to Dy Cabon. The "they" is still the Gods. But it's late enough that I can't look it up to see what the "Something" is right now.

Tread carefully, please. I'm still waiting for my pre-ordered Cryoburn hard copy. And I want to read it while I myself am in a virginal condition, so to speak.SPetty wrote:Indeed, it was good. Spetty has it, it's Ista to dy Cabon in Paladin of Souls, about the gods. Sardonic indeed. Your turn.
Re: LMB Quote Game
I won't say another word about Cryoburn, and I was truly trying to be careful to vent without giving it away. I'm sure you'll enjoy it when you read it.
Anyway, next quote:
Who is speaking?
Whom is he talking to?
Anyway, next quote:
What book?"It's me, don't shoot," he called in a strangled tone meant to be a whisper.

To the second question: no, I took my own laptop to Japan, but I left it safely at Tokyo U while visiting Kyoto and its area. Now I am in Tokyo again so I can come online again.
Wha tyo urefe rt oi sa nexampl eo fm yspecia lfor mo flysdexia: I tend to put the blank just before the last letter of a word, which is added to the next word (minus its last letter, and so on..)
As to the first one, I have no personal objections to extending the game from pure quotes to questions, but one has to be precise as to how to formulate them. I suggest you start a new thread, where you explain clearly what kind of questions are allowed, and make that thread a poll (the "poll creation" is just below the window that opens when you click on "new topic" in the "Lois McMaster Bujold" subforum). Then we vote, and the majority decides.
I have a few hunches as to the next quote, but without my books.... I'll try and guess. I order not to sidetrack, here is the last quote:

Re: LMB Quote Game
I was thinking maybe Whit, at the beginning of _Passage_, when he takes shooting practice at a target just when Dag and Fawn are arriving and almost shoots one of them, when seeing Dag prepared to respond in kind. But this does not make sense, why should he whisper? He should make himself as conspicuous as possible.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Good thinking, but it's not Whit. I could further expand to say it's not Passage, either.
Well, I could further expand a lot, but that's enough.
