Re: LMB Quote Game

Post by voralfred »

Because of the change of page and to improve legibility, I quote here rogerstenning's post offering us a new quote. I hope Suzette won't mind, but we scarcely have new participants and it would be a shame to discourage newcomers.
As for the applicability of the "ping-pong" rule in this special situation, namely (for rogerstenning's information) the 5 days exclusion period when the penultimate winner cannot answer the quote posted by the last winner

- Suzette had just answered Caroline's post so Caroline should be forbidden for 5 days on Suzette's post, and though the post is not by Suzette but by rogerstenning... she should still be forbidden for 5 days
- But then Suzette just won, so even more then Caroline she should still be forbidden for 5 days even more
- So you don't think I am making it up to answer earlier than both of you, I decree for myself a self-imposed 5 days exclusion, too
- of course rogerstenning cannot answer his post at all

So Francis, James, you have the field for yourself (and of course, any other player, "revenant" or newcomer) for 5 days....
rogerstenning wrote:OK... first posting on this thread, let's see if I can make it a good one...

"...it'll be something that involves large explosions..."

Bonus points: Circumstances of statement? :deviate:
rogerstenning, please follow this thread, the accepted etiquette is that you have to confirm that the answer is correct, even though, after it is found, any player can usually find it in the text and confirm (as I just did for Suzette's answer to Caroline's quote; but that was to validate your question, as I am more or less acting umpire here, having started the game some time ago; I just hope Suzette is not too angry at me...).
After you confirm and the winner posts a new post, you are forbidden to answer that question for 5 days after it is posted. In the case, however, that someone else answers rapidly and posts a third quote, you are allowed to answer it even long before 5 days have elapsed since the posting of the second quote. It is not infrequent that a quote is answered and a new one posted within a few hours! a few words here were truncated when I originally posted

Always willing to move aside and make room for new victims players! :)

Welcome, rogerstenning! As I don't recognize the quote, it shouldn't be too hard to not answer for a bit. Though it might be entertaining to post hints should I actually find the quote in the next few days...

OK... hint time...

"...it'll be something that involves large explosions..."

I'm paraphrasing here, so as not to make things too easy... This was said in a cold and sneering manner, and there were three characters present in a very familiar setting... :deviate:

In Vorkosigan House Duv and Ivan find Miles in a really bad, unresponsive mood. Duv is concerned about Miles' state of mind. Ivan explains how Miles would go about committing suicide. That's when Ivan says the quoted sentence. It's narrated in Civil Campaign.

You're right, of course. Had I thought about it a little longer, I would have had it completely correct. But I was in a tearing hurry to give the solution before Suzette, Caroline, James or Alfred could cut me off.

It goes to show that "Haast en spoed is zelden goed!" (Haste and speed is seldom good!) (notice the similarities?). Let's say, though you didn't specifically ask for which book, I earned just 1/2 point for the quote + 1/2 point for the bonus question, agreed?

Also, because I'm going on vacation to Le Grand Massif  and, except for Cryoburn, I won't be taking my Bujold Library with me, I'll waive my turn in favour of Suzette (SPetty), whose turn it was in the first place.

Suzette, since I probably won't be participating for the next three weeks, go ahead and make it a really tough quote.

Finally, somewhat belated, welcome Roger!

See you guys after I break a leg (you wish) or so.

For now, over to Suzette,

Francis

P.S. Le Grand Massif, Haute-Savoie, France (Java-script required to see the nice photo's]

EDIT: Spelling correction of "tough", erroniously spelled "though" at first.

OK, so let me put my grain of salt: even though Francis made a small mistake, he deserves the full 1+1/2 :sherlock: and would normally get the next quote; since he gave it to Suzette, then this is OK: Suzette gets her quote now.

As far as the exclusion time, whom should it apply to?
A bit murky:
- Francis won, but will not post
- Roger just posted but did not win previously
- Caroline has been excluded on Roger's post for her last win
- Suzette was just excluded for her previous win, but will post now anyway

So let us say there is NO exclusion period this time. Of course Suzette cannot answer her own quote, but everyone else can answer it immediately. Ater that we'll be back to the normal rule.
Roger, if you feel you can update the :sherlock: thread yourself, please do, if you prefer I'll do it this time (also, one should update Suzette's position, Caroline forgot to do it with all this confusion -I'll do that now).

You raised a good number of points there of course  - however, given Volalfreds' comments, I think the full one-and-a-half-points shouldapply this round: Therefore, a full Sherlock is granted :sherlock: (voralfred, I'm using my phone to post this - can you do the honours, please? Thanks!) 8)

free-for-all, this time, noone is excluded on this coming round, normal rules apply only on the round after.

Sorry, it was a busy weekend here as well as at home, I see!

Next quote:
They recognized who he was─ and, therefore, who must have sent him.
Note that this is narrative, and not a direct quote from a character.

Which book?
Who is he?
Who sent him?

For anyone who's interested, the wide dash (that doesn't appear on the keyboard) is produced by holding down the alt key, and typing 196.

Hint: It's not in TSK. And it's in the first quarter of the book. That should narrow it down, right?

Ah-ha!
Found it finally
Book: _Hallowed Hunt_
He: Ingrey
Who sent him: the king was still the alive so, formally, Ingrey was the king's representative; in effect, Horseriver was behind the choice of Ingrey, if I remember correctly.
Not just first quarter, first page, first paragraph even (but that would not work in the "First Line Game: it was definitely not the very first line)

Correct! I thought it would be giving away too much to say it was on the first page of the book. I considered "first chapter", but figured I'd narrow it down if anyone wanted more hints. Though I would have said that Sealmaster Hetwar sent him (being his employer), probably the king told Hetwar to send someone, so it's a chain of command issue.

XXX could hear him in his head now, snorting, Damned technocrats. Nothing but AAA BBB with a more expensive set of toys. YYY would have loved being proved right.
The italics part is the thought, imagined by XXX, that the absent character (YYY=him) would have thought, or said, or rather snorted, in these circumstances.
AAA BBB is a phrase composed of two nouns

So:
Book?
Who is XXX?
Who is YYY=him? (I don't insist on the exact way he is called in this quote, just the character)
For the main answer, I don't insist on AAA BBB

Bonus:
A similar train of thoughts went through XXX's mind in a very different setting. To find it, you need AAA BBB, but it is not enough.
For 1/2 point, find the book where this happens and the context there.

We are back on the normal "ping-pong" rule. Since the bonus is too closely related to the main question, Suzette please do not answer the bonus until either 5 days are gone or the main answer is found. In the event where the player who gets the main answer does not get the bonus, you can answer immediatley afterwards without waiting for the five full days (and not even for my confirmation, if you know for sure the other player's answer is the correct one).

"YYY1 YYY2," XXX assured him, "would have been very pleased with your work." XXX could hear him in his head now, snorting, Damned technocrats. Nothing but AAA BBB with a more expensive set of toys. YYY3 would have loved being proved right.

YYY1 YYY2 is a two-words expression to designate the same character as YYY3. So you can answer by memory without checking the text, I don't insist on either of these, any nonambiguous designation for this character is OK, and since there is already a different bonus, there is even no bonus for that. Also, it turns out that XXX is referred twice in the exactly same manner in this quite, but it is OK if you use any other nonambiguous designation.

Hey guys! Hurry up! Or Suzette will guess this one too! You have less than 48 hours left!!!!
"I suppose so. How the devil should I know?" ZZZ looked highly aggrieved, but his hand sneaked out to re-check his repairs.

YYY4 YYY5 is still another two-words expression for character YYY
ZZZ is the "you" of "your work", as well as the "you" who had, or had not, met YYY (ZZZ did not, incidentally); now you have to find who he is but any characterisation would suffice.

Still a bit more
" (...) If he were a CCC, I'd tell him to rest at this point."

If I did not hide the words CCC and DDD the quote would be really too easy to find, but I don't ask what they are, so you can answer by memory.
I do ask in addition, however, who is the "he" mentiond in the first line (I only give the very end of what ZZZ says at this point) and the second one, and who is not a CCC.
