I don't have the book right now, but isn't it Miles to Dr Dea when Ninny is hurt in a "retroactive abortion by proxy attempt" in Moutains of Mourning ? Dea is complaining about having a horse for a patient, and Miles pretends that his grandfather Piotr would have been proud of Dea's work (which he wouldn't).

Sorry for the long silence.

Hi Caroline, nice to have you back!
Yes, you are right, that's exactly that!
One sherlock and the next quote.

What about the bonus? When did a similar idea (about expensive toys) cross Miles' mind?
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

Is that in Borders of Infinity? Where the surgeon is frustrated because she has all of her training, but none of the tools she needs to make Suegar better?

Hi sarsaparilla!
Welcome to this game, and to this website!
I'll give you the 1/2 bonus point, even though I was thinking of a different passage in the same book, much earlier, when Moles mentally reviews the "Interstellar Judiciary Commission's rules for the treatment of POW's", including "access to medical personnel", but not to medecine. But it really is the same idea, so you do deserve the 1/2 :sherlock:.
Normally, it is the winner of the main point who should post the new quote.
Yoohoo, Caroline, are you here? If you'd rather delegate your turn to sarsaparilla, (if you are too busy for the follow-up yourself) please do so.
There is no exclusion period for winning the bonus, sarsaparilla, so you can answer Caroline's quesion as soon as she posts.

Caroline?

Yoohoo?

If you don't have time to post a new question and follow up, why don't you just give your turn to sarsaparilla?

Well, it looks like Caroline is away.
She still has first grabs on posting, but if you are around, sarsaparilla, I suggest you could post a new question if Caroline doesn't do so soon. Please, as soon as you see this post, do confirm your intent to post a new question (or, alternatively, do decline). Then you can take another day or two to choose a proper quote, but please don't take too long.

I'm sorry for the delay  Got a lot on my mind these days, and I just forgot.

Anyway, here's the next quote : "This is our one-man crime-wave ? [...]"

Who said that to whom, about who, in which book ?

Don't worry about being a day or two late posting the new quote, Caroline. I'm sure Voralfred is just anxious to get to 100 Sherlocks. :D
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.

As a matter of fact, since I'll be away for two weeks before my 5 days expire, I won't be able to answer this one even if it survives 5 days....!

I was just afraid Caroline would be away for long, a few days is never a problem, but sometimes oen waits and waits and waits... SOme other quote games just died of it.

So just it won't get lost in the noise:

It's from Diplomatic Immunity, where Guppy (Russo Gupta) is caught by the Docks & Locks work gang, and presented to the Quaddie's Graf Station Security people; "This is our one-man crime wave?" is said by Adjudicator Leutwyn, practically, I think, in amazement, or more likely, in disbelief.

Sorry it's a little late, I got side-tracked by the real world again

So...

Who said: "...Have you ever heard of Occam's Razor, xxxx?" where xxxx is a character, of course

For an extra few points, who was this said to, what were the circumstances, and what was the background to the problem(Nutshell version)?

Clearly someone is spouting two or more hyppopothemusises. Someone else insists on trying the simplest one first.

So a first attempt.

xxxx is Mark.
Simon Illyan asked the question.
Mark wanted access to Impsec's reports and records because he wanted to try and trace the route and destination of the portable cryochamber while Miles was in it.

Well, it's possible, isn'it? Isn't it?

I've been asking myself who (in the Nexus) would not know of Occam's Razor. That would be:
  • - people with a lack of schooling; like Bothari
    - people too young to have reached that level of schooling; like Jin
    - people with intentionally limited schooling; like the clones of Bharaputra's customers and Ryoval's creations; also the modified people like Taura and Gupta
In my wrong answer I pointed at Mark. But we may assume that Ser Galen would have given Mark the same level of schooling as Miles. So that eliminates Mark though he's Miles's clone. Sorry, brother.

Then again, Ivan might mention it rhetorically for the sake of argument.

Unfortunately, I have no idea where to find the targeted conversation. I'll have to wait for a hint.

I'll take a stab at it.

Said by Haroche.
The book is Memory.
XXX is Miles (although Haroche probably didn't call him that).
Miles is trying to figure out what happened to Illyan; Haroche is trying to convince Miles that the chip failed of natural causes, that being the simplest explanation.

Well, Roger, this is a twisted one. And your clue is as twisted as the question itself...

I'll make an attempt, but only half-hearted as I don't remember a specific situation. But the speaker being as sneaky as you, I would try By in _CC_ explaining one of his tricks, probably to Ivan (who would thus be xxxx), and showing how the accusation for it would fall on someone else, because Occam's razor would not point to himself.

I think you're missing the obvious: worlds where schooling is not as widespread. I'm highly doubtful that it's in the Vorkosigan Saga at all. In part because Occam doesn't sound like much like a Vorkosiverse name, and in part because I'm almost sure it's from Chalion somewhere, possibly the snowy area where Caz, Ferda and Foix cross into Ibra (not there, just checked, Bastard's Teeth), based on the clue. Though it could be related to Prince Jokol's ice island...

Am I the only one thinking Occam's Razor is geographical, rather than a metaphor involving a razor??

OK, clue time. Two, this time (once only treat there  )

To set minds at rest, It's in the Vorkiverse, not Chalion (if only because I tend to avoid fantasy in favour of Sci Fi  ).

And bent Necklin Rods aren't a safe way for a young man to travel... :deviate:
