Favorite Book

Post by lmodesitt »

As I may have said before, to pick a single book, or even a few, is impossible. It's like asking a parent to pick a favorite child -- and unless you only have one, you can't do it. I think each of my books has different properties, and that's why so many readers find different ones their favorites. That's the way it should be.

U.K. Books

Post by lmodesitt »

According to Orbit, my sales in the U.K. have slumped [along with everyone else's published in mass market paperback] enough that they're no longer interested in publishing me. I have my doubts that such is the entire reason, but that's the only reason given to date.

Truely annoying. O well it's off to Amazon I go for the Latest Recluse/Corean novels. By the way, which of you Sci-Fi books would you suggest I pick up?

Many thanks for replying, it's rare indeed (for me) that one of my favourite Authors to take the time out and reply to my querries. *End of suck up*

S.F. Books

Post by lmodesitt »

I've asked a number of my readers which S.F. books they prefer, and they all prefer different ones. So...

Military S.F. -- The Parafaith War

Lit/politics/culture -- Archform:Beauty and Flash

Far future Earth -- Adiamante

Space Opera [of sorts] -- The Forever Hero

Ecological SF -- The Ecolitan books

alternate history -- The "Ghost" books

That's the best I can do; but I'm sure other readers will have their suggestions.

Hello and a few *burning* questions

Post by Althoryn »

I was delighted to discover the LEM webpage and this BB as well. It's the perfect diversion while on a job that keeps me at my desk, but not always busy. I also very much appreciate that you Mr. Modisett, take the time to read posts and answer questions.

The first LEM book I read was Adiamante, given to me by my brother. It has been my favorite book for several years now. I always keep an extra copy so I can give it to people to read - and I don't mind if they keep it; I just buy another used one so I can share its wisdom with others. After that, I picked up The Magic of Recluce, and I am now a Recluce junkie.

I could prattle on, but I'll ask my questions instead, some of them have been on my mind for quite a while.

1. What is a ryall, and what does it look like? I dabble in graphics, and would like to make a ryall icon - but I don't now what a ryall is. The only internet reference I've found is that it equals royal - as in the flower pennyroyal.

2. Can you tell us more about Werylynn/druids/angels. (I'm not always good at picking up the subtle clues, and so I may have missed something that was in a book.) The fact that Werylynn is a musician has always made me think he is actually Weryl, and added 'ynn' in honor of Arylynn, his 'stepmother'. Are they the same person?

In (?) The Order War, Justin visits someone who calls himself a druid. He mentions his two children (Creslan and Llyse ?) dying young. But at another point I think someone refers to him as an angel. Is Werylynn angel or druid? Are the Angels anyone who came on the Winterlance? What's the difference between an angel and a druid? Were there druids before Nylan and Arylynn went to live in the forest?

3. Was Lornth named after Lorn? _______ (the memory is going slowly but surely) -- Nesslek's mother, wears malchite headbands - any connection to the malachite throne of Cyador? Did Lorn colonize middle Candar, bringing people who became the forebearers of the white wizards and black mages? I've wondered how the handful of people from the Winterlance could be the ancestor's of all the people who turn out to be order masters of varying strength.

Sorry - that's a lot of questions. Hope I wasn't too long-winded. Thanks again for reading and posting for your fans.

edited for typos and punctuation. 1/7/05

How many Recluse books have you read? If you read them all you can find most of your questions.

to be fair, I don't think that's true.

(1) is a question that interests me - and I've been keeping an eye out - it isn't stated anywhere.

(2) is not the clearest of subjects. my interpretation was that there WERE (native) people who predated the demons and the angels (the original druids?). (althoryn: for explanation of angels see Fall of Angels and Chaos Balance).

(3) - there is no statement in the books either way (although since the lornthians were 'barbarians' I can't see how)

Questions/Answers

Post by lmodesitt »

A ryall is a flower, usually depected graphically on banners in black, although the flower is not black. I never did describe it in any great detail, although I have a mental image. It's neither a sprawling blossom that always appears overripe -- like a rose just before it loses its petals -- nor is it one of those tiny little blooms.

Lornth is named after Lorn. I postulated that he did expand Cyador somewhat -- he wanted the copper mines in that area -- but his successors were unable to hold the area to the northwest of the mines proper, and this lapsed into "barbarianism."

Answers to questions about the angels and relationships from Nylan I prefer not to detail at this point.

Thanks much for your answers Mr. M. I appreciate your time.

Fortyseven - I've read all the Recluce books except Wellspring of Chaos. As I mentioned, I'm not always good about the details which is why I've gone back and read most of them again. And now I will probably read them, again, to see if I've missed other details.

kavetch - thanks for your post. Glad to know others wonder about some of the same things.

no worries

you should find that there is an 'edit' option in the top right of the post (it is ibdof policy to allow you to make changes such as spelling corrections - you are ask to maintain the same content, and addend changes in the fom of a note at the bottom as in 'EDIT: corrected spelling and added a comment about pink elephants' - or whatever.

Back from the minor diversion:

It's interesting that Lornth is named after Lorn - I'd noticed the similarity, but dissmissed it. You learn something new every day!

another question: What colour IS a Ryall?

OK i've another question. Many of your main military characters are either expert marksmen, blademasters or pilots. During your time in the service were you an expert marksman or a pilot, or maybe you are a blademaster :P

Expertise

Post by lmodesitt »

I was a Navy helicopter pilot, search and rescue.

My marksmanship was adequate, but not expert. My blade work is minimal, although I can claim to have actually tried [but not often, and not again].

Mr Modesitt

This is my first post here, and I'm embarassed to say I'm only just finishing the first book of yours I've ever read, which happens to be The Magic of Recluce. I'd passed your books by many times thinking that someday I should read them and finally recently bought a few to start me off. Now I'm sorry I waited so long!

Forgive me if this has been brought up before, but I wanted to comment on black wizards versus white wizards and how you challenge the idea that White is good and black is evil. I really loved your description of Chaos being white because of the colors in white light. It was something I had never considered, but once I read it, it made perfect sense. Was that something you did on purpose, as in to challenge people's thinking, or was it something that just sort of... happened?

Also, how do you know when a book is finished? I've done a little amateur writing, though I haven't dared try to get anything professionally published, and I always seem to get caught up in editing and rewriting. I think my personal record stands at completely rewriting the same story five times, and still being frustrated with it not turning out quite right.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with your readers!
