There was always some idiot in a crowd to start these things.
What book?
Start what?
Who's inconvenienced by "these things"?

I couldn't find the exact spot but it's quite familiar.

What book? Warrior's Apprentice
Start what? Impromptu celebrations
Who's inconvenienced by "these things"? Miles
The Princess Bride.

Correct, though I think the "things" referred to were the chants, though it may have applied to the gathering itself. Anyway, you're up (that was quick)!

By the way, it's when Miles is getting ready to head back to Beta Colony and Barrayar after Elena's wedding. :)

Well, I have to be quick to beat Voralfred. ;) True, it could be chants, too, although they aren't very common is Vorkosiverse.
" ... I don't want power. ..."
The book?
Who says this?
To whom?
Why?

In Barrayar (or is it the very end of Shards - not counting Aftermaths, of course - when Aral is appointed Regent-elect?)

Cordelia to Vordarian, telling him she is not interested in power but don't want idiots (or equivalent) to have power on her, when he accuses her of wanting power for herself.
I answer by memory, away form my books, in an attempt to beat the time record.

I remember the scene vividly, but there are two similar occasions, one at the end of Shards when Aral is appointed Regent-elect, one at the beginning of Barrayar after Ezar's death, when he is confirmed as Regent, I'll have to pick up the books to be sure.

Something else I must check is, was this asked before? Maybe it was.

Edit: in fact it was I who asked it earlier, in August 2007
viewtopic.php?p=1824032#1824032
So it is in Barrayar, after all, after Ezar's death, not at Aral's nomination near the end of Shards.
This accounts for my recognizing it. Maybe you should post another one, Blackwing, and consider this as a fumble. By the way, it was you who answered it, at that time

Further edit: both occasions where this scene could have taken place are in fact in Barrayar, one before Ezar's death and the other afterwards; I had this false memory of the first one being in Shards. Since the edition I have is "Cordelia's Honor", it is easy to get a bit mixed-up. It is irrelevant to the fact of this quote being a fumble and having to be re-asked; but just to clear the record.

Even discounting the fact that this is a fumble, my taking 6 minutes to answer did not break the record for the LMBQG, which is still held by Ghost in 5 minutes.
However I think I hold the absolute record for all games in the "One line Blurb" in one minute.

D'oh! Let's see if this quote is better:
"I never told other than the truth. ..."
The book?
Who is speaking?
To whom?
About what?

Curse of Chalion
Ista
speaking to Cazaril
about the curse itself. She never told the whole truth before, but never said anything which was not true.

Indeed! :( I again answered by memory. I found the sentence I thought I remembered: it is almost the same, but the exact wording is different.

Just my bad luck! For once that I managed to break Ghost's speed record, it had to be with the wrong answer!

A bit longer quote:
"I suppose... you've no reason, now, to tell other than the truth."
"I never told other than the truth. ..."
The book?
Who is speaking?
To whom?
About what?

Still Ista, then, but in "Paladin of Souls" talking to Arhys dy Lutez about the rumors saying that she and Arvol dy Lutez had been lovers. She just denied it.

Sorry, Voralfred ^^ I was blocked at the same place as you before the tip. 't's not as if you needed the sherlock anyway :P

So, next quote :
You're not in charge here. I'm the adult, dammit
Who, in which book, about what ?

Bonus half-point for anyone pointing at at least two other mentions of issues with growing up (not in height..)

Your quote sure nags something in my backbrain (as LMB would write), but I jsut can't put my finger on it.

But as for the bonus.... about half LMB's entire work is about becoming adult (in parenthesis, the character becoming adult)

_Fallng Free_ (a whole bunch of Quaddies)
_WA_ and _Vor Game_ (Miles)
_WA_ (Elena)
_MoM_ (Harra and Lem Czurik)
_Brothers in Arms_ and _Mirror Dance_ (Mark)
_Komarr_ and _CC_ (Ekaterin - yes, you can be a mother without being an adult yet)
Next book in Vorkosiverse? (Ivan?)

_CoC_ (Iselle and Bergon)
_PoS_ (Ista - see above)

_TSK1_ (Fawn)
_TSK3_
Spoiler: show
Whit
and even _Spirit Ring_ (Fiametta and Thur)

One can add
_Labyrinth_ (Taura)
_Mirror Dance_ (Lilly Junior)
_Vor Game_ (Gregor)
and also_MoM_ and even _Memory_ (distinguishing Lord Vorkosigan from Admiral Naismith mentioned above about _WA_ and _Vor Game_)
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

Yeah, I know, but I was thinking of very specific quotes by specific characters. Elena's little speech of rebellion to her father in WA, for example, doesn't qualify : she is growing up, but doesn't think of it is these terms. Ekaterin's advice to Kareen in CC, about how adulthood isn't a prize given by parents to children who earn it by being good, but something one has to give to oneself, would qualify (except that now I've given it, I won't accept it as an answer ^^).

And no more than one quote per character per book.

OK, so for the bonus three precise quotes, all three not taken fro mthe above list

_Barrayar_ at the very end; about Miles
the "model glider" metaphor, ending with: "I believe he'll soar high, dear Captain."

-Komarr_ about Nikki wanting to become a jump-pilot
Tienne arguing against Miles who concludes: "It depends on how hard you grow."

_CC_ about Kareen (and also, in a sense, Mark) the entire old-shabby-couch-down-from-the-attic episode (hard to give a special line; the entire discussion)

As for the main quote, I still haven't found it.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

a little hint, maybe?

So...

First quote is a bit borderline : about growing up in general, not problems to do so. Second is all right, and third not exactly precise enough, but still, you'll have your half-point as soon as the main quote is found.

As for giving a clue, well, I already wanted to do so yesterday, but my book was, hmm... not *lost* you understand, but appeared to be misplaced ^^ Getting more determined today, I found it again (... beside my bed  ), so here it goes :
Deep down in her chest, someone was screaming and sobbing. You're not in charge here. I'm the adult, dammit

Ekaterin in ACC. I'm pretty sure this has to do with her thoughts of having Miles taken away after her brother and cousin visit, like a toy that Nikki never really played with or wanted until she was going to get rid of it.

(My copy of ACC is a few miles away)

Oh, my. The problem with this is that I know the Vorkosigan books inside and out, and so pretty much every line is obvious to me, so how could anyone not guess right?

Hmm.

"It's the suave way he mops the foam from his lips."

I just hope it's not too recognizable, but it probably is.

Well, you did not ask exactly what details you wanted.

I did not recognize where the quote is exactly, but I can guess. Usually, the asker makes clear what (s)he wants exactly. Answering by guessing is allowed (even if you don't get the exact chapter/passage), but one has to fulfill the explicit requirements.

Here I can guess

- Book: _ACC_
- the person being described: Richars Vorrutyer

but as for the person uttering the sentence there are many possibilities (Miles, Dono, Byerly....)
So if you don't require the character who says this, but only the book and the character described, I could get the Sherlock, if I am right (I am not sure, but I am moderately confident). Otherwise, let me further guess:

Byerly
but with rather small confidence.

BTW, Kurt (may I call you just Kurt? or is your real name different? my real name is just Alfred, as you probably guessed)

Welcome to the forum :D

Welcome to the LMBQG :D :D

and Congratulations for your first win, which I hope is the first one of what will become a long series :D :D :D

Yoo Hoo, Kurt Montandon :!:

Are you around :?:

Could you either confirm or infirm my guess?

I went through part of _ACC_ without finding the quote. I might have missed it, so I could still be right, but I am starting to doubt it.

Other players: do not assume I am necessarily right, it was really just a guess (it is just that in case I am wrong, I'll have to wait for infirmation before trying another guess, so I am not yet scratching my head for alternatives)

I thought you were correct about the book, but not the person, but (after searching my copy for the entire evening) I searched for "suave" through the "look inside" feature on amazon.com, and the quote doesn't seem to be in A Civil Campaign.

I'll likely be skimming my copy of my second guess tomorrow. :)

It's nowhere near ACC.

I'm actually kind of pleased people aren't getting this ...
