You're right. Take your turn, please.

BTW, I think that Miles cites his mother two sentences before, when he talks about a "clash of two competing fantasies", but he phrases himself a witticism of "the only game in town".

Without checking I thought of Portmaster Bel Thorne telling his thoughts about the concept of a Barrayaran "Emperor's Voice" to Lord Auditor Miles Vorkosigan, in the wardroom of courier ship Kestrel, in the book "Diplomatic Immunity".
Well, it checks out. It's on page 46 in my hardcover edition.

OK. Here we go ...
... xxx's menacing glower at yyy was alas undercut by an escaping snicker, which became a guffaw when zzz whispered something in xxx's ear. ...
Who are
xxx ?
yyy ?
zzz ?
What is the subject causing the 'menacing glower', 'escaping snicker' and 'whispered something' ?

bonus: What did zzz whisper in xxx's ear?

XXX is Aral Vorkosigan, YYY is Ivan Vorpatril, ZZZ is Cordelia, the subject is the cheerfully obscene ice rabbits Ivan added to the marriage's decorations in "Winterfair Gifts". I supposed the whisper was something like "Rule nine", about that time Cordelia tried to classified Barrayaran rules about what to say or not in whose presence, in "Barrayar."

Yes.

LMB didn't say what the Countess whispered, so that was left to the reader's imagination.
I think your interpretation deserves the bonus point because it's very consistent and it's the first one offered too.

You're to serve next.

Because Miles is in love with Helena, he considers telling Baz to go fly a kite. But he refrains from actually saying it. Instead, as their liege lord, he gives them his blessing.

Well, I checked both passages, in Chapter 18 when he procrastinates and in Chapter 19 when he gives them his blessing and did not find it.
Anyway, EPS, you were the one who asked the previous question. In principle, you are not supposed to answer Caroline's question for 5 days, that is, till Wednesday Feb 10th, 5:05 am forum time (10:05 am in Belgium, I would say)

Edit: rather 11:05 considering it is now about 9am for me and only 3am, not 4am, forum time
On the other hand, were someone else answer it and have time to post before that time, you would NOT have to wait till Wednesday to answer the new question, even if the correct answer, Caroline's approval and the new posting all occur within a few hours from now, you could answer the new question immediately, the new 5-day exclusion applying only to Caroline

Nice question, Caroline!
I have a nagging feeling that I remember reading it, but where? I'm racking my brains....

My apologies. :worship: It slipped my mind.
Anyway I knew that I gave a wrong answer, so there's no harm done.

I'm almost sure I guessed who and what and in what book.
I just have a doubt to whom (probably the most concerned person, but just possibly some third party...).
I have to look it up.....

My guess was Cordelia not speaking of her love for Aral in _SoH_ but I was unable to find it, neither with him, nor on Beta, on her return, to her mother or Dr Meha or some other person of the Beta Shrink.. I mean, Mental Health Board.
So maybe that is completely wrong.

It was somewhere in the "Curse of Chalion". The speaking person is Casaril, and he's afraid of some God's wraith but I don't remember details.

Ok, three possibilities, one of you found quite near it, but I won't said who because the details I asked for were not yet all given and I don't want to have to split the point between several persons. Make up your minds, folks ! I only give the point when I have all three answers to my three questions.

AFAIK, Caz didn't awfully like to say aloud about his fears talking with Priest Mendenal.

Who gave this good advice to whom?

Ahum! I thought I remembered when a similar phrase was used. And it is just where I thought, in fact.
But the wording is somewhat different.
Maybe I'll keep it for a later quote....

The original phrase from Earth real history, as you know, is "Kill them all, God will recognize his own" (c). This sentence was paraphrased twice in Bujold's books in two different ways. Probably you've found one of them, and I meant the other.

Well, apparently you know where is the other isntnace, so I should not use it later! In the other instance, too, LMB slightly modifies the historical sentence. ;)
But I still don't know were is yours! :(

Name the book and the situation.
I can think of four situations where the sentence in question may be applicable. But I can't check it out because I don't have the books available right now and it appears my mnemonic chip isn't drawing enough power.

1. In "Shards of Honour". "Stun them all! ..." says Cordelia before she and one of Aral's loyal crewmates drop through a hatch into the engine room of the Barayaran warship to subdue the political officer and his henchmen.

2. In "Warrior's Apprentice". "Stun them all! ..." says Miles before he and his companions board and conquer the Oseran ship.

4. In "Mirror Dance". The clones in Bharaputra's facility aren't very cooperative. Mark (pretending to be Miles), exasperated with the behavior of the male clones, says to Bel Thorne: "Stun them all! ..."

3. Also in "Mirror Dance". "Stun them all! ..." says Ivan to Mark at a dance in the Imperial palace, while they're discussing ploys for him to pick up a pretty girl.

Would these be useful hints for other competitors?

Dear Jetta
Definitely give hints. If the first hints does not bring the answer in 4-5 days, give more hints, and even a third set. Only in very last resort should one give up and leave anyone offer a new quote. In this game, as far as I remember, we have always eventually found the answer, after one, 2 or 3 sets of hints. Other games, like "First line Game" or "One line Blurb" it happened more often ,but usually because not enough hints were given, in my opinion, lack of interest on the part of the "asker" rather than loss of interest on the part of the players (ar least, of me! I kept asking for hints that never arrived!!!)
