I read in a magazine yesterday that after years of languishing away, Hollywood may be close to developing a workable script for this book. Will Smith is being looked at to star.
Get this, though, they decided not to make the anatagonists vampires, but generic monsters, thinking it would appeal to a wider audience. Also, they decided to set it in New York NY, thinking the desolation would be more evident in a large city. Sigh.
I agree, the protagonist is not terribly sympathetic. But I think it is a portrait of a man on the edge, and the author has succeeded in making the viewer see him as he should be seen. I this Matheson does little things to make him seem more sympathetic, like his concern and grief for his former neighbor.
