Looks right to me (though I'd have to go to the book to verify that it's Auson). I wonder if Voralfred got the e-Arc of Cryoburn, and hasn't noticed that someone answered the quote....Caroline Tredez wrote:Damn, I replied, but my post was lost in some technical bug, it seems. The hint really gives it away : it's Miles to Auson in The Warrior's Apprentice, as he is about to board a pelian ship full of bombs set to explode (the explosion being the "blah-blah" event). They're gonna stop the explosion a full three seconds before too late ^^.

No, no, it is just that my access to the Web is still haphazard .
This is indeed the correct answer so Caroline gets one and a half sherlock, and the next quote.
Though Suzette hints that she knew the answer.. and Caroline wrote she had already answered earlier so maybe Suzette had seen that first answer and this is why she did not answer? Anyway as it stands, the one and a half
and the next go to Caroline.

So good.

Re: LMB Quote Game
I'm pretty sure it's Aral in Shards of Honor speaking to Cordelia about the condition of Ensign DuBauer (this is off the top of my head, so I may have the spelling wrong) who was incapacitated, but not killed, by a nerve disruptor.
Unless, of course, the sentiment is elsewhere, too.

Correct on all accounts ! Your turn, SPetty
Re: LMB Quote Game
At least the search for Voralfred's last quote got me something (that's when I ran across it).
Anyway, next quote:
Book?
Who is thinking this?
Enough to qualify to do what?
Anyway, next quote:
Note that it's a thought, not spoken out loud. (I wish the quote boxes would get rid of the opening quotation in the left corner. I get distracted by misused punctuation.)Is that not enough to qualify me?
Book?
Who is thinking this?
Enough to qualify to do what?

Re: LMB Quote Game
It seems an expansion is in order:
Book?
Who is thinking this?
Enough to qualify to do what?
It's still a thought, not spoken out loud, of course.I am an orphan now, though. Is that not enough to qualify me?

I think I have it, but I'm not sure I have the right to answer yet, so I'll let 2 days pass with the hint to give everyone a chance (and to check if I'm right ^^)

Further hint: The quote is fairly close to the beginning of the book.

Re: LMB Quote Game
I still have no idea where to go look for it.
At first I thought of making a list of all possible confirmed orphans (confirmed by Lois' text or logically deduced, that is).
Of course Gregor, Aral and Duv are orphaned after their parents' death.
Drou and Helena are not an orphans, but Kou, Alys, Simon and Bothari probably are.
Elli Quinn, though she has relatives, is probably an orphan, because she doesn't go visit any parents in Ethan of Athos.
But in the case of Rowan Durona it is vague. One may assume that the parents of her progenitor have passed away, leaving her a clone with lots of siblings but technically orphaned. But it is not certain.
I'm afraid someone (Caroline?) will have the answer long before I complete such a list.
Of course what I understand to be the definition of orphan may be wrong.
Come on, Caroline, shoot! Give us "le coup de grâce" ...

Re: LMB Quote Game
Just so you know, none on your orphan list so far is the right orphan.
The person has recently become an orphan in the book, though we don't see the funeral.

Re: LMB Quote Game
GOT IT!!!!
Who is thinking this? Ista, two weeks after the death of her mother.
Enough to qualify to do what? She is considering the fact that she has had a "new thought" and that she desires the road, much like "The poor orphan boy (who) packed his sack and started off down the road to seek his heart's hope...".
It was the, "recently become an orphan in the book, though we don't see the funeral." that got it for me. I kept wondering who in the Miles' universe had a recent funeral: Empress Lisbet of Cetaganda? We WENT to her funeral! Then I thought, wait a second, didn't Ista's mother,,,,.
Good job!
James
Book? Paladin of SoulsI am an orphan now, though. Is that not enough to qualify me?

Re: LMB Quote Game
Correct! I wasn't too sure about dropping that particular hint, but I didn't want it to go cold. I'm glad it was a challenge! There were a few similar style quotes in Paladin of Souls (from my recent re-read) that I may use later, just because they're interesting, and not ones I remembered.

X, Y, and Z are three different words that make up a complete sentence, or question in this case."Xxxx yyyy zzzzz?" she said, appalled. "Eew!"
Book?
Who is appalled?
What is her question?

A little more.
"Xxxx yyyy zzzzz?" she said, appalled. "Eew!"
"Not often. Just in the worst of summer or the worst of wointer."

Re: LMB Quote Game
Ooh, I'd guessed wrong then. I was thinking it was the Cetagandan lady who was bothered that Ivan was a body birth in Cetaganda. But now that I think about it, she was too Cetagandan to say, "Eew," and she said something about Yenaro being crude. I think.
Interesting quote!

Tsk, you're really too "Miles-oriented" ^^ My guess would be Fawn to Dag (in the second book of TSK, Legacy) after she gave him the socks she has knitted. I think the question is "Your feet bleed ?"

Re: LMB Quote Game
I do have to ask, how recently have you read it Caroline? I didn't particularly remember it, though the expansion of the quote lead me to re-read Legacy over the last few days. I wouldn't have been able to guess the question without reading it recently. Though if James had posted the question in full, it would have been easy to guess.

Re: LMB Quote Game
@SPetty : a few months ago, I guess ? I'm not sure I've re-read it this year yet. But the whole TSK books are among my favorites, I'm a big fan of romance-oriented stuff, and Dag's one of my favorite characters. I was pretty sure the "Eew!" sounded Fawn-ish, but I needed the expansion to remember the circumstances.
